CLEMSON, S.C. — Bailey Enoch and Sydney Wells each hit first-inning home runs for Fordham, which held a 5-0 lead after two innings, as the Rams defeated the Longwood softball team, 7-3, in Clemson's Tiger Invitational at McWhorter Stadium on Sunday.
Senior center fielder Emily Vinson pulled the Lancers to within 5-3 with a three-run home run with one out in the bottom of the fourth inning, but Fordham put the game out of reach with a pair of insurance runs in the seventh.
"We ended our toughest preseason to date, in preparation for what will be an extremely tough Conference schedule," said Longwood head coach Dr. Megan Brown. "We have learned many lessons, grown in many ways, but the journey and the mission are not complete. Back to work this week."
Wells batted 3-for-4 with the homer, a walk and two runs driven in to lead the 12-hit offense for Fordham (7-12-1). Gianna Sarlo chipped in a pair of doubles and an RBI and Enoch posted two hits in five at-bats, as well.
Holly Beeman improved 5-3 with a complete-game effort, scattering eight hits and two walks with two strikeouts in 101 pitches.
Trailing 5-0 with one out in the fourth, Lauren Taylor walked and Korynna Anderson singled up the middle, setting the table for Vinson. The Elgin, S.C., native then belted the first pitch she saw from Beeman over the left-center field wall for her first homer of the season to pull within two.Â
The Lancers loaded the bases in the fifth with singles by Lauren Fox, Avery Drake, and with one out, Maggie Hiatt. Beeman, though, induced a pair of pop outs, wiggling out of trouble.
Vinson and Drake each collected two hits on the day, with Drake — a graduate transfer from Houston Christian — posting her second multiple-hit outing at Longwood.
Maggie Chapin fell to 7-7 in the loss. She retired just one batter, giving up three hits and two earned runs. Er'ron Burton (two innings) and Cierra Gawryluk (4 2/3 frames) finished in the circle.
Longwood next jumps into Big South Saturday and Sunday at Gardner-Webb. The series starts with a 2 p.m., doubleheader at Brinkley Softball Stadium in Boiling Springs, N.C.
