ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Junior guard
Malea Brown led three players in double figures with 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting as the Longwood women's basketball team topped UNC Asheville, 66-60, at Kimmel Arena in Big South Conference action on Wednesday.
Â
The win, the Lancers' seventh in the last eight games against the Bulldogs, snapped a three-game losing streak for Longwood. LU improves to 7-19 overall and 4-9 in the league, while UNC Asheville falls to 10-17 and 4-10 in conference play.
Â
"Really proud of our effort and grit on the road tonight," Longwood head coach
Erika Lang-Montgomery said. "Wins are hard to find this time of year and road wins are even tougher. I thought we did a great job of taking care of the ball tonight and we came up with some big defensive stops late game. Our team fought hard for each other tonight and we put ourselves in position to get the win,"
Â
The Lancers, who bolted to a 36-26 halftime advantage, shot 16-for-32 in the first half and hung on down the stretch as the Bulldogs crept to within 58-55 with 1:18 to play.
Â
Graduate guard
Anne-Hamilton LeRoy scored 14 points in 29 minutes off the bench and redshirt senior
Adriana Shipp-Davis added 13 points and four rebounds.
Â
Longwood led by as any as 11 at 45-34 with 3:01 remaining in the third quarter when LeRoy knocked down a jumper to cap a 5-0 spurt and force a UNC Asheville timeout. LU led, 47-40, as the quarter ended.
Â
A Nycerra Minnis basket with 7:19 on the clock cut the UNCA deficit to 51-47, but
Laney Bone responded with a layup off of an
Otaifo Esenabhalu assist on the next possession. Following a timeout, a turnaround jumper by Esenabhalu made it 57-49 with 5:31 to play. Jaila Lee free throws coupled with a McKinley Brooks-Sumpter jumper cut the lead to 57:53 with 2:25 left.
Bailey Williams then hit a free throw with 1:37 remaining, ending a four-minute scoring drought for the Lancers prior to a Lee layup that cut it to a three-point game.
Â
From there, however, Longwood was 4-for-4 from the line, regaining its double-digit edge.
Â
LU scored 26 points from 18 Asheville turnovers, reached its season average of 11 steals and outscored the Bulldogs' bench, 21-10, in the win.
