Lancers’ Comeback Falls Short at Georgia Southern in 68-64 Loss

Longwood erases 13-point third-quarter deficit, but can’t hold on

STATESBORO, Ga. — The Longwood women's basketball team overcame a 13-point third-quarter deficit against Georgia Southern on Saturday, taking a one-point lead at the beginning of fourth, but the Eagles rallied to sneak away with a 68-64 win at Hanner Fieldhouse.

Longwood junior JaMya Robinson hit a pull-up jumper with 1:21 to play to make it a two-point game but GSU's Paris Gaines dropped in a layup and drew contact from Malea Brown, knocking down the ensuring free throw, to give her team a two-possession lead at 66-61. Georgia Southern then tallied a pair of free throws in two trips to the line in the final minute to ensure the victory.

Sophomore forward Frances Ulysse scored a career-high 16 points on 6-for-11 shooting with eight rebounds to pace the Lancers. Freshman guard Lili Booker added a career-best 13 points, including three 3-pointers, two of which came in a minute-and-a-half stretch in the third that helped catapult Longwood to a 51-50 lead at the end of the period.

"I liked the grit and resilience that our team showed to start the second half being down 10 and to come back, win that quarter and take the lead." said Longwood head coach Erika Lang-Montgomery. "I liked our response and so now it's learning to build from that and learning to execute a little bit better so we don't have like we did in the second quarter."

The Lancers (3-2) outscored Georgia Southern (4-0), 24-13, in the third after trailing, 37-27, at halftime. GSU's Nicole Gwynn connected on a 3-pointer on her team's first possession of the second half for a 40-27 lead prior to Mariah Wilson completing a three-point play to ignite the Lancers' run.

Booker canned both her triples in the quarter in an 8-0 run that got Longwood to within five at 44-39 with 5:20 left in the frame.

Amor Harris hit a driving layup with 3:48 to play to make it 46-43 Eagles before Nakiyah Mays-Prince responded with one of her own. Mays-Prince, though, was called for a technical foul after the play. Harris hit both foul shots, Ulysse followed with a layup and Booker two more from the line as Longwood earned a 49-48 advantage with 2:15 to play in the quarter.

"Lili was a huge spark off the bench for us," Lang-Montgomery said. "She had some big shots, had some great defensive possessions. And so I'm really excited that she got her career high tonight and want her to continue to stay aggressive and be ready."

Ulysse collected the rebound of a Kiki McIntyre shot and found her cutting to the hoop to tie the game at 56-56 with under seven minutes remaining in the fourth. Robinson then stripped Gaines of the ball and found Ulysse for a layup and the lead at the 6:21 mark.

"Frances was very strong inside," Lang-Montgomery said. "She made her presence known in the paint today. I like how she defended, too. … She had to do it on both sides of the board, so really great performance from her."

With Georgia Southern trailing, 59-57, on another Ulysse bucket, the Eagles' Jazmyne Jackson hit a 3-pointer to give her team 60-59 edge, one that the home squad held the rest of the way.

After the Eagles scored the first six points of the day, Longwood used a 14-2 run over 3:55 to take a 14-8 lead with 3:30 to play in the first and trailed by just two at 20-18 after one period on the road. The game remained tight in the second quarter until GSU scored the final eight points of frame, including a jumper at the buzzer from Gwynn for the double-digit deficit.

Georgia Southern shot 42 percent from the field, limited Longwood to 36.5 percent and carried a slim 39-38 rebounding advantage. The Lancers outscored the Eagles, 20-15 on the fastbreaks and received 32 points from their bench compared to 20 for GSU.

Gwynn lead all players with 20 points, while Gaines had 15 and Jackson 12. India Green corralled a game-high 14 rebounds.

Longwood next heads to Charlotte, N.C., on Monday to take on Queens at Curry Arena. Tip is slated for 7 p.m., on ESPN+.

"Monday presents another opportunity for us to go and work on our plan for 40 minutes," Lang-Montgomery said. "We, we can't have the lapses that we did in that second quarter. [Queens is] a very hungry team looking for their second win of the season, coming off a loss to Winthrop. And so I know they're going to be ready for us and we've got to make sure that we are ready, as well."
