Gardner-Webb uses Pair of Second-Half Goals to Nip Lancers, 2-1

Hinke posts career-best 11 saves in loss

FARMVILLE, Va. — Max Fisher tucked the rebound of a Lucas Mauro shot into the net in the 79th minute to lift Garner-Webb to a 2-1 Big South Conference win over the Longwood men's soccer team on Saturday.

Longwood junior goalkeeper Max Hinke parried Mauro's shot on the play, but left it for Fisher who did not miss. The goal came 10 minutes after senior Ethan Stevenson tied things on a scramble in front of the Gardner-Webb goal with his team-leading eighth marker of the season.

The Runnin' Bulldogs' Jesper Vikman gave the ball away in the back to junior Simao Coelho, who nearly put it home, but goalie Alan Horrocks deflected it just enough for a Longwood corner kick. Coelho's ensuing set piece found its way to the goalmouth and Stevenson slid in to muscle it past Horrocks.

"Ethan is Johnny on the spot," Longwood head coach Paul Gilbert said. "It seems like he's always in the right place to get some tap-ins and also score some really good goals. And so we're super thankful for his work, and glad that he could get, get us back, level, but disappointed that we couldn't, couldn't keep it."

Gardner-Webb opened the scoring not five minutes prior when Elias Khodri tallied his seventh goal of the season from Tiago Campos and Breno Correia.

"That's a tough Big South men's soccer match," Gilbert said. "Credit to Gardner-Webb, they're a great side. They've done a great job with that program. It's more growing pains for us. I thought we did some things that we wanted to do and and maybe some things that we had tried to prevent.

"We didn't do well enough job with that, but all in all, it's another step in the process for our team and continuing to grow," he said. "In this new style of playing and new staff. We've just got to continue to keep pushing forward and be at our best come November."

Gardner-Webb (7-3-2, 3-0-1 Big South) outshot the Lancers, 31-9, and tallied nine corner kicks to Longwood's four. Hinke, who posted a career high in saves for the second consecutive match with 11 Saturday, including six a scoreless first half, kept the Lancers level most of the way.

Longwood fell to 4-7-2 overall and 2-3-0 in the league with loss and gets another crack at it against UNC Asheville next Saturday at 2 p.m.
