FARMVILLE, Va. — Luc Lavielle and Marco Wright scored a goal and assist each as Campbell erased an early lead for the Longwood men's soccer team on its way to a 3-1 non-conference victory at the Longwood Athletics Complex on Tuesday.
Sophomore UNCW transfer Mikey Hernandez scored his first collegiate goal in the fourth minute for the Lancers before Campbell (5-2-4) rallied for the win. The loss for Longwood (3-4-2), its first in four matches at home this season, ended a three-match unbeaten streak.
The Lancers got off to a fast start for second consecutive match as Hernandez finished off a tic-tac-toe passing play started by Aristhid Kamdjin. He found Jesus Macaya, who touched the ball to Ethan Stevenson, who in turn, found Hernandez for the finish.
"It was a phenomenal goal," Longwood head coach Paul Gilbert said. "I think that'll go on the highlight reel for how we build up and how we finish."
Longwood, though, had several chances to extend the lead, including a shot from Mateo Nance that Campbell goalkeeper Max Leviton (three saves) turned aside.
The Camels knotted the game in the 13th minute when Lavielle deposited the rebound of a Wright shot behind Lancers' goalie Max Hinke.
Campbell held an 8-4 advantage in shots in the first half, gaining the upper hand as the half progressed.
Campbell took the lead in the 54th minute when, under pressure from Lavielle, Hinke played it to Ethan Roberts who tucked it into the back of the net.
Wright closed the scoring with 15 minutes to play, picking out the top right corner from 20 yards.
"We gave up a goal in transition, which, you know, we kind of knew that's who they are," Gilbert said. "They try to score in transition and are a pretty direct team. And so I think we dealt with that for most of the game. And then in the second half, you have two guys make execution errors that gives them easy opportunities to score, and they capitalized on that."
Longwood jumps back into Big South Conference play Friday at Winthrop. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., on ESPN+.
"I think this is a journey," Gilbert said. "This program has to grow in winning these type of games. In winning games where the talent level on the pitch is fairly even. And there needs to be a higher expectation of ourselves when we go into these matches. So we'll learn from this and certainly get ready for Friday."
