ROCK HILL, S.C. — Suhong Jung scored the game-winning goal with 88:32 on the clock as Winthrop claimed a 2-1 win over the Longwood men's soccer team in Big South Conference play at Eagle Field on Friday.
Jung's goal came just 28 seconds after junior forward Desmond Adeyemi tied things for the Lancers at 1-1 with an assist from junior Mateo Nance.
With the victory, Winthrop moves to 3-5-1 overall and 2-0-0 in the Big South, handing Longwood (3-5-2, 2-1-0) its first league defeat of the season.
On the game winner, Bruno Riveron Sagrero played a square ball to Jung, who dribbled to his right and slotted it home past Longwood goalkeeper Max Hinke.
Trailing, 1-0, Adeyemi scored his second goal of the season when Nance found him with a cross from the left flank. Adeyemi took a quick touch and buried the ball behind Winthrop's Jack Kilstrom. Junior defender Joshua Yoder started the play, earning a second assist.
The match was scoreless until the 69th minute when the Eagles' Rodrigo Ferreira scored with another assist from Riveron Sagrero. On that play, Riveron Sagrero found Ferreira with a pass 25 yards from goal. Ferreira dribbled to his left and took a low shot that beat Hinke low to the right corner of the net.
Longwood led in shots in the opening half, 7-4, and finished the night with a 10-8 advantage in total attempts. The Lancers also held a slight majority of possession for the match.
Kilstrom made two saves in the Winthrop nets, improving 2-4-1 on the season, while Hinke also stopped two shots, falling to 3-5-2 overall.
