Team Effort Pushes Lancers to Victory at Charleston Southern

Longwood snaps skid with season-best shooting performance, strong defense

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Five players finished with at least eight points apiece as the Longwood women's basketball team earned its first Big South Conference win of the season in a 66-57 decision over Charleston Southern at Buccaneer Fieldhouse Saturday.

Junior Kiki McIntyre scored a Longwood-career-best 18 points, adding six rebounds and six steals, to lead the Lancers (3-11, 1-1 Big South), while graduate Anne-Hamilton LeRoy scored 15 and grabbed two steals. The two scored 13 and 11 points, respectively, after halftime, helping Longwood separate.

The Lancers shot a season-high 46 percent from the field in the win, their sixth in Charleston. LU holds a 15-12 edge against CSU all-time.

Junior Malea Brown, a third player in double figures, tallied 11 points, including banking home a 3-pointer at the third-quarter buzzer.

The Lancers led 15-14 after the first quarter, 25-22 at halftime and 46-36 after three periods.

"I'm just really, really proud that we finally put four quarters together," Longwood head coach Erika Lang-Montgomery said. "Kiki had a really impressive day for us. She played at a really high level today, took care of the ball, found her teammates, defensively was just active the whole time she was on the floor.

"I'm excited that hopefully we can continue to build off of [the win]."

Laney Bone contributed eight points and six boards in 32 minutes off the bench, and Janay Turner had eight points on 4-for-8 shooting.

"That's really good, that means we're moving the all, we're distributing the ball and that's what we want to offensively," Lang-Montgomery said of the balance. "We were smart about the shots that we took, didn't really need to take a lot of 3s today. We were able to execute in the halfcourt, so really pleased with our efforts on both sides of the ball."

Longwood led by as many as 16 points with 4:12 remaining in the contest when McIntyre hit a jumper in the paint and was fouled. Otaifo Esenabhalu earned the Lancers that possession with a defensive board on the other end. Esenabhalu registered six points and eight rebounds on the day.

Charleston Southern (4-11, 1-1) held its largest lead of just 10-6 at the 4:15 mark in the first on a Keshaunti Nichols basket, but Longwood never allowed the Bucs to gain momentum throughout the game, limiting CSU to 34 percent from the field. Despite that, Kenndi Jackson led all players with 21 points on 8-of-14 shooting.

Longwood carried a 36-35 advantage in rebounding, scored 21 points off of 19 CSU turnovers and tallied 34 points in the paint in the win.

Longwood is back on the road Wednesday at Radford. Tip time at the Dedmon Center is set for 7 p.m.
