Women's Soccer Rallies, Earns 2-1 Road Win At VMI

Arnone Assists Both Goals as Silberstein, Curney Each Score

LEXINGTON, Va. – Amanda Arnone played the role of distributor for Longwood women's soccer on Thursday afternoon at VMI, and Coryn Silberstein and Peyton Curney took advantage.

The senior set the table, and the freshmen delivered goals as Longwood (2-4-2) earned the road win 2-1.

SCORING:

               1             2             FINAL
LWU      1             1             2
VMI       1             0             1

4' | VMI—Eva Torres, assist Sedona Dancu
37' | LWU—Coryn Silberstein (1), assist Amanda Arnone
49' | LWU—Peyton Curney (2), assist Amanda Arnone

HOW IT HAPPENED:

VMI (1-7) struck first after Eva Torres was in the right spot at the right time to strike home a bouncing ball in the box, but Longwood found its footing after that.

The Lancers proceeded to apply pressure for the rest of the half, outshooting VMI 10-2 in the opening 45 minutes.

The effort paid off in the 37th minute. After a nice combination play down the sideline that saw the Lancers string together multiple passes, Arnone ticked a short pass to Silberstein just to the right of the penalty spot. The freshman didn't waste any time and smashed the ball into the back of the net to even the score with her first collegiate goal.

After halftime, the Lancers kept the pressure up early. This time, Arnone, bent a cross into the 18, and Curney split the VMI defense to track down the bouncing ball. Curney tapped it past the VMI goalkeeper to give Longwood the lead for good. It was her second goal of the season.

From that point on, the Lancers managed the match to earn their second road win of the season.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"An ugly win is better than a pretty loss, so we gladly accept this result," said Longwood Head Coach Todd Dyer. "We shot ourselves in the foot conceding that first goal, but we showed tons of grit coming back into the game and eventually earning the three points. Two goals from two freshmen is encouraging, as is our senior defender providing both assists. Still, we have tons of room for improvement, especially with our game management, moving forward. Sunday will be another big test on the road.

UP NEXT:

Longwood wraps up non-conference play and a four-match road swing with a trip to Charlotte on Sunday as the Lancers play the 49ers. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m., and the match will air on ESPN+.
