FARMVILLE, Va. – The stakes were high at Lancer Field today, as Longwood and Campbell squared off to decide the Big South softball regular season champions. The Camels claimed a share of the title with a 4-3 win in game one while the Lancers picked up a 6-1 win in game two, setting up a grudge match to decide the number one seed tomorrow afternoon.
Maggie Chapin started in the circle for Longwood (28-19, 14-5) in game one against Campbell (38-14, 15-4), holding the Camels scoreless until a strong fifth inning gave them the lead.
Er'ron Burton got the call in game two, tossing seven strikeouts while allowing one run on route to the win.
"Really pleased with [Maggie and Er'ron] staying pitch to pitch and their adjustments in the game," said head coach
Dr. Megan Brown. "They made sure the moment wasn't too big and stayed pitch to pitch."
Longwood's power-hitting was on display today, as the Lancers knocked four homers out of the park.
Maryanna Guy led the way with a home run in each contest while
Lauren Taylor and
Emily Vinson each provided two-run shots in game two.
Falling to a 4-0 in the fifth inning of game one, the Lancers rallied back to cut the Campbell lead to only one run in the sixth inning. Longwood had a chance to tie the game in the seventh, but
Jaden Pone was called out at first to end the game as
Peyton Coleman came across the plate for what would have been the tying run.
After a heartbreaking game one loss, the Lancers came out determined to force a deciding game three. Longwood quickly jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first inning of game two and never looked back.
Er'ron Burton, who threw 2.1 innings in relief for
Maggie Chapin in game one, threw a complete seven innings in game two. Her command on the mound combined with timely home runs helped push Longwood to the victory, setting up quite the finale on Sunday.
"Very proud of [the team's] fight," said Dr. Brown. "Very proud of them coming back, trusting the process, and playing together. When they play as a unit, they play their best softball, and that's all anybody can ask."
The Lancers and the Camels will battle for the conference's number one overall seed tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Lancer Field. Senior Day festivities will take place on the field prior to first pitch.
"We have to stay present in the moment," said Dr. Brown. "You have to stay with what [you] need to take care of right this minute. Don't worry about next minute or the minute before."
