CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Fresh off of a conference series win over Charleston Southern, Longwood softball traveled south for a midweek non-conference bout against the Charlotte 49ers. The Lancers fell 9-7 in a game that didn't fail to produce fireworks on the offensive end.
Longwood (21-16, 8-3) registered 11 hits in the contest to Charlotte's (26-17, 12-5) 10 in what was an entertaining game throughout. The lead changed hands four times and each team scored five or more runs in the fifth inning.
"I was very pleased to see the adjustments at the plate," said head coach
Dr. Megan Brown on her team's offense. "Pleased to see quality at bats and working together on offense."
Maggie Chapin got the start for the Lancers, although
Er'ron Burton was assigned the loss.
Leigha Hill and
Reggie Kanagawa both saw action as well in tonight's contest.
Seven different players recorded a hit for Longwood, including multi-hit days from
Kayley DeVivi,
Korynna Anderson,
Lauren Fox, and
Maryanna Guy.
Guy had perhaps the best outing of her young career, batting 2-3 with five RBIs off of a double and a home run.
After regaining the lead in the top of the fifth inning off of a five-run rally, the 49ers responded in kind with a six-run inning of their own. Charlotte held a 9-7 lead following the fifth and held onto it to claim the midweek victory.
The Lancers return to Big South play this weekend for a conference road trip to Winthrop University. Games one and two are set to be played on Saturday with the series finale set for Sunday.
"We have a tough series ahead against a strong Winthrop team," said Dr. Brown. "We will have to play well and together as we prepare for the weekend."
