FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood fans and softball alumni filled the stands of Lancer Field for today's Big South doubleheader against the Charleston Southern Buccaneers. The Lancers were victorious in both contests, claiming a 3-1 win in game one and a 5-2 win in game two.
Reggie Kanagawa stood tall on the mound for the Lancers in game one, tossing a complete seven innings while only conceding one run.
Er'ron Burton earned the win in game two, throwing five innings without allowing a single run.
Despite the game one win, Longwood (21-14) was outhit by Charleston Southern (16-22) six to three.
Jaden Pone,
Lauren Fox, and
Kayley DeVivi each provided a hit for the Lancers in the series opener.
While DeVivi did bat in a run with her RBI single, Longwood's two other RBIs came from a groundout by
Lauren Taylor and a sac-fly off the bat of
Lindsey Hay.
Kanagawa entered the top of the seventh still on the mound after having pitched the entirety of the game. Despite allowing an RBI single in the frame, Kanagawa and the Lancers held on to win game one.
"They just did a great job keeping things at bay and making good adjustments," said head coach
Dr. Megan Brown on the game one victory. "It was good to see us keep things simple, staying with the 'one out at a time, one pitch at a time' mindset. They did a great job."
Although a
Lauren Taylor groundout scored
Jaden Pone to begin game two for the Lancers, Longwood found themselves trailing through the second inning. CSU's Raleigh Lewis connected on a two-run shot to left field that put the Buccaneers ahead 2-1.
The Charleston Southern lead wouldn't last long, as a three-run third inning vaulted Longwood into the lead.
Abby Wyatt scored on an error to get things started and
Lindsey Hay gave the Lancers the lead with a two-run RBI single.
Another Longwood run was added for good measure in the sixth on a
Kelly Park sac-fly to put the Lancers ahead by three runs. All the while,
Er'ron Burton kept the Buccaneers in check on the mound, holding the Big South foe scoreless in each inning she pitched.
"Charleston Southern is a great team, they're competitive and bring it every single pitch," said Dr. Brown. "We knew we were going to be in a fight back and forth. I was pleased to see us fight and continue to fight throughout each game and each inning."
Longwood and Charleston Southern will play game three of the weekend's series tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Lancer Field.
"We found out last year how important each game is," said Dr. Brown. "This conference can be decided by one game, and every single game is important. We can only do what we can do with a pitch in front of us, but we need to treat every game the same because they are all important."
