Softball Splits Final Two Games Of T-Mobile Crimson Classic

Vinson Walks It Off Against Robert Morris, Lancers Fall 8-0 To #9 Alabama

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Longwood softball concluded its stay in Tuscaloosa this weekend, splitting their final two games of the T-Mobile Crimson Classic. The Lancers defeated Robert Morris 1-0 off of a dramatic seventh inning walk-off and lost 8-0 in a rematch against No. 9 Alabama.

Maggie Chapin picked up the win in a complete seven innings against Robert Morris, holding the Colonials scoreless while allowing only one hit. Er'ron Burton started in the circle against the Crimson Tide but was outdueled by Montana Fouts, Alabama's All-American ace who threw a perfect game against the Lancers.

Longwood (10-9) finished off their trip to Alabama with a 2-3 record across three days and now embark on a two-week hiatus before returning to the field.

After going scoreless across their two games yesterday, the Lancers first game of the day against Robert Morris (5-9) was looking like it could've been a repeat early on. While the Lancers did manage five hits in the game, the score was tied 0-0 headed into the seventh and final inning.

Korynna Anderson got things started in Longwood's late rally, connecting on a double to right-center to place her in scoring position. One batter later, Emily Vinson came to the plate with a chance to walk it off for the Lancers. She singled straight up the middle, leading way for Anderson to come home and seal the victory in dramatic fashion.

However, Longwood would not have been in a position to win without the heroics of Maggie Chapin on the mound. The freshman posted her best start to date, throwing a complete seven innings with four strikeouts, no walks, and only one hit allowed on the day.

"Proud of our team for staying in the fight for game one," said head coach Dr. Megan Brown on her team's win over Robert Morris. "This was definitely a character-building game."

Following their win over Robert Morris, the Lancers shifted focus to No. 9 Alabama (16-3), whom they lost to in a close 5-0 result the day before. Er'ron Burton kept Longwood afloat for the majority of the game before being replaced by Reggie Kanagawa in the fifth inning.

Although Longwood fought, the arm of Montana Fouts and timely hitting from the Crimson Tide ultimately led the way for Alabama. Fouts recorded a perfect game and the Tide's offense recorded 12 hits en route to an 8-0 run rule victory after six innings.

"I'm proud of [our players'] fight and grit," said Dr. Brown. "They are earning a lot of respect for their hard work and dedication."

Longwood won't see the field for the next two weeks after playing in four tournaments on consecutive weekends. The Lancers will be back in action on March 18th from the John Cropp Classic hosted by the University of Kentucky.

"We'll be looking forward for some time to reset and prepare for conference play," said Dr. Brown ahead of her team's break.
