HOW IT HAPPENED:
It was a tale of two halves. In the first, William & Mary blitzed Longwood after a choppy opening few minutes. The Tribe scored 12 unanswered goals to break a 1-1 tie and take a 13-1 lead at the break.
Nine players had a goal in that run for William & Mary, and the Tribe's defense made life tough for the Lancer offensive attack.
However, Longwood came out with renewed vigor after halftime, and the Lancers were the aggressors over the final two quarters.
The Lancer defense only gave up one goal in the final 30 minutes, and the offense found its footing as the second half went along.
Freshmen
Kendra DeFilippo and
Sophia Passa both slotted home a pair of second-half goals for the Lancers, but the damage had been done in the opening 30 minutes.
WHAT THEY SAID:
"We are still a work in progress in all aspects of the game," said first-year head coach
Kylar Ferguson after the game. "We aren't a finished product yet, but we have a team of girls willing to keep working. It takes time as we keep putting things together."
"It was nice to see DeFilippo and Passa take advantage of their opportunities after halftime," Ferguson added. "They had the chances and took them head-on."
ADDITIONAL NOTES:
Emily Cate Smith had a team-best two assists, with both coming after halftime. She now leads the team with 14 assists on the season.
Lexi Hamilton recorded her first collegiate point with an assist to Passa on a transition play late in the contest.
Amelia Carlile tallied nine saves in goal for the Lancers, and she has now made more than 200 career saves for Longwood.
