Lancers Edged 5-2 At VCU

Looney Drives In Two, But Bottom Of Rams Order Racks Up Six Hits

RICHMOND, Va. – Justin Looney delivered a big base hit for Longwood baseball on Tuesday night, but the bottom of the VCU order did enough to edge the Lancers 5-2. Ethan Brooks and Scottie O'Bryan combined for five base hits and three RBI to lead the Rams (10-11).

SCORE:

LWU      2             6             1
VCU       5             8             0

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Lancers (7-16) created chances early in their fourth straight road game, but VCU managed to wiggle out of every jam and strand six baserunners in the first three innings. Meanwhile, the bottom three batters in the VCU order banged out six of the team's eight base hits in the game.

The Rams struck first in the fourth when O'Bryan poked a two-run triple down the right field line for a 2-0 lead. Brooks added an RBI single a few batters later.

After VCU extended the lead to 4-0 in the sixth, the Lancers answered in the seventh. Eliot Dix and Gregory Ryan, Jr. both singled. Justin Looney then beat the shift with a two-run single through the right side that trimmed the lead to 4-2.

However, VCU answered with a run in the eighth, and Campbell Ellis closed the game out on the mound. The lefty came on in the eighth and retired six straight to end the game and earn the save for VCU.

Evan Bert earned the win after tossing a career high 5.0 innings for VCU. The freshman struck out six. He came on in relief in the third and didn't allow a run until the seventh.

Cole Taylor threw well for Longwood before running into trouble in the fourth. He was tagged with the loss after striking out two while giving up three runs.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"Our offense has to continue to get better at executing with runners in scoring position," said Longwood Head Coach Chad Oxendine. "Cole threw the ball well tonight. He's been doing a great job in midweek games."

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

The Lancers drew six walks in the game.

Ried Dittner came on and threw well for the Lancers. He got out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth and retired all four batters he faced.

Loy Hickmon threw 1.1 scoreless innings for Longwood, and he came on with runners on base in the sixth and didn't allow any inherited runners to score. He struck out two.
