LEXINGTON, Ky. – The John Cropp Classic was a weekend filled with uncertainty, as temperatures forced two of the four scheduled games to be canceled. However, the end of today's contest was no question for Longwood, as the Lancers walked it off on a
Lindsey Hay two-run homer against DePaul.
Er'ron Burton earned the win for the Lancers after entering with the game tied 4-4, striking out four over the final 1.2 innings.
Maggie Chapin started today's outing, throwing five complete innings to go along with three strikeouts.
Longwood (11-10) got their offense working early and often, scoring four of their runs in the first three innings.
Lindsey Hay recorded a sac-fly in the first to get things started followed by a
Korynna Anderson solo homer, her second of the weekend.
The good times kept rolling in the third, as
Jaden Pone scored off of an error to put the Lancers ahead 3-0. Anderson sent home another run on an RBI single, and things were looking good for Longwood.
Slowly but surely, DePaul (8-13) climbed back into the game, scoring four runs throughout the fourth and sixth innings to tie the game at four apiece.
Down to their last out in the bottom of the seventh, the Lancers needed something big to avoid extra innings. The bat of
Lindsey Hay did just the trick, as she sent a rocket over the left field wall, sending herself and
Lauren Taylor home to walk it off for Longwood.
"The hallmark of great teams is their ability to overcome adversity, to fight when it is hard, and to find ways to win no matter what," said head coach
Dr. Megan Brown on the dramatic victory. "Couldn't be prouder of their fight and finish this weekend."
Following the John Cropp Classic, the Big South conference season begins for the Lancers. Longwood will travel south to take on Presbyterian from March 25
th to 26
th in what should be an entertaining and pivotal opening series.
"This was a great finish to preseason and an exciting launch point for conference," said Dr. Brown. "We will always have room to grow, but very pleased with where we are as we get ready for Big South play."
