FARMVILLE, Va. – After going 2-1 across the first three games of the Cavalier Classic, Longwood softball finished out the weekend in dominant fashion. The Lancers picked up victories over St. John's 13-5 and Maryland Eastern Shore 12-0, earning run-rule victories in both contests today at Lancer Field.
Maggie Chapin and
Reggie Kanagawa earned victories for Longwood (8-6), with Chapin collecting her fourth of the year and Kanagawa collecting her first in a full five-innings of work.
The wins push Longwood over the .500 mark on the season, with the Lancers' only losses coming at the hands of Power 5 opponents. Today's results also pushed Longwood's record from the Cavalier Classic this weekend to 4-1.
"Pleased to see us find our rhythm as a team, that's something we've been talking a lot about," said head coach
Dr. Megan Brown on her team's performance this weekend. "It was great to see a lot of execution on both sides of the ball and across the board. Definitely a lot of team wins and growth this weekend."
Although the Lancers may have won before a full seven-innings were played against St. John's (4-10), the Red Storm certainly did not make it easy. Longwood found themselves trailing 4-3 in the fourth inning and in need of a spark on offense.
That spark came off the bats of
Kayley DeVivi and
Lindsey Hay, who delivered an RBI-double and two-run homer on consecutive plate appearances in the bottom of the fourth. However, the Lancers weren't finished.
Longwood put the exclamation point on Game 1 in the sixth inning, scoring six total runs capped of by a
Korynna Anderson grand-slam that put the Lancers ahead by eight, sealing the run-rule victory.
"Our offense works best when it works together," said Dr. Brown. "Our hitters get things started, but when our baserunners are doing the things that they're supposed to [in order to] help our hitters get better pitches, that puts them in position to maximize the most out of balls put in play."
There wasn't as much drama down the stretch against Maryland Eastern Shore (2-7), as the Lancers quickly jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a
Lauren Taylor RBI single and a
Kelly Park three-run bomb to left center.
Things cooled down until the bottom of the fourth when Longwood put up eight runs in the frame. RBIs from
Emily Vinson,
Rileigh De Weese, Kayley Devivi,
Maryanna Guy, and
Leigha Hill helped do the damage for the Lancers.
Following the fourth inning's offensive explosion,
Reggie Kanagawa retired the side 1-2-3 to earn the win and second run-rule victory of the day for Longwood.
"I was pleased to see us working as a staff," said Dr. Brown. "They all do different things well, so it's nice to be able to add variety within our staff and it's great to see them help each other. Very pleased with the execution and growth that they're showing as we get closer and closer to conference."
The Lancers return to action this upcoming weekend at the T-Mobile Crimson Classic, hosted by the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Longwood will take on the likes of No. 11 Alabama, Mercer, and Robert Morris next weekend.
"We'll see some more high-quality teams this weekend, and we're excited for the opportunity to play great competition again," said Dr. Brown. "We'll look to stay with our plan and play Longwood softball."
