TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Longwood softball fell in their season opener to Purdue by a score of 2-1 in their first bout at the JoAnne Graf Classic hosted by Florida State. The game had to be delayed three separate times due to inclement weather and was finally completed this morning.
Mo Wimpee picked up the victory from the circle for the Boilermakers while sophomore
Er'ron Burton threw eight strikeouts in her first start of the season.
After originally being slated as a 9 a.m. first pitch, the Lancers and Boilermakers finally got underway at approximately 11:15 a.m. on Friday morning. Longwood played as the away team for the neutral site game, with
Lauren Taylor singling to center field in the top of the first. However, the Lancers would have to wait over an hour to retake the field, as a weather delay shut down the game in the bottom of the first.
Once the game resumed, Purdue would cash in first in the third inning, scoring on a wild pitch to take a 1-0 lead.
Longwood responded swiftly in the top of the fifth, as
Lauren Taylor knocked through her second single of the afternoon, this time clearing the way for
Lauren Fox to cross home plate to tie the game at 1-1. Unfortunately for both sides, the game would enter another weather delay shortly after, causing the contest to be postponed until the following morning.
The game resumed Saturday morning tied at one apiece in the bottom of the fifth inning. Purdue made quick work after the delays, scoring on an RBI groundout to put the Boilermakers ahead 2-1. Longwood's offense was unable to respond in the following innings, and Purdue held on to claim their first victory of the season.
