FARMVILLE, Va. – Terren Ward scored a game-high 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Georgia Southern to an 87-65 victory over the Longwood women's basketball team at Joan Perry Brock Center Friday.
Ward, who came into action averaging 22.5 points and 10.7 boards per game, secured her eighth straight double-double and shot 8-for-17 from the floor and 6-of-9 from 3-point range, helping the Eagles (10-2) to their eighth consecutive win.
Graduate guard
Anne-Hamilton LeRoy paced Longwood with a season-high 23 points – including 14 in the fourth quarter – shooting 9-of-17 on the day she was honored prior to tip-off for eclipsing the 1,000-point mark last season. LeRoy currently has 1,330 points and is just five from breaking into the Lancers' all-time top 10. LeRoy also hit her 100th career 3-pointer late in the fourth quarter, finishing the game 2-for-5 from distance.
"Anne has just been an efficient player her whole career here at Longwoood and so it's not surprising that she's close to moving up on that scoring chart," said Longwood head coach
Erika Lang-Montgomery. "We look to get her the ball; we count on her to make shots for us and she did that for us tonight."
Playing for just the second time in the Joan Perry Brock Center and in its first home game in 40 days, Longwood (2-9) hung with the Sun Belt power early, trailing 28-17 after the first quarter. The Lancers, though, shot 1-for-14 in the second, allowing Georgia Southern to gain a 41-24 halftime advantage. GSU entered the day sixth nationally in field goal percentage defense, limiting the opposition to 32 percent from the field.
The Lancers outscored Georgia Southern, 25-20, in the final 10 minutes, turning nine Eagles' miscues in the period into 12 points. GSU finished the day with 24 turnovers, one off its most this season.
"We won the fourth quarter, so that was promising," Lang-Montgomery said. "I liked ending on that good note. We turned them over defensively. That's what we like to do. We just didn't do a great job of keeping them off the glass tonight."
The Eagles, who lead the country in rebounding averaging over 51 per game, outrebounded Longwood, 60-31, in the victory.
Kiki McIntyre scored nine points while
Adriana Shipp-Davis and
Janay Turner added nine apiece for Longwood.
Otaifo Esenabhalu led LU with eight rebounds.
Next up, the schedule doesn't get easier as Norfolk State comes to town Dec. 31 at 2 p.m. The Spartans, currently 8-4 overall, are ranked No. 23 in the most recent mid-major top-25 poll.
