High-Powered James Madison Defeats Lancers, 84-50

Esenabhalu collects career-high 15 rebounds for Longwood

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Preseason Sun Belt Conference favorite James Madison received at least eight points from six different players and double figures from three to defeat the Longwood women's basketball team, 84-50, at Atlantic Union Bank Center Wednesday.

Carole Miller led all players with 14 points off the bench, going 3-for-4 from 3-point range, Mikaya Tynes added 11, also in a reserve role, and Kseniia Kozlova tallied 10 points to round out the Dukes in double digits.

Anne-Hamilton LeRoy paced the Lancers (1-3) with 11 points on 4-for-8 shooting, while Otaifo Esenabhalu corralled a game- and career-high 15 rebounds, including 14 on the defensive glass.

"Our team is playing hard and learning how to battle for 40 minutes," Longwood head coach Erika Lang-Montgomery said. "We had some moments of good execution offensively in the first half. We will continue to work to improve our rebounding, as it is an important part of our defensive execution."

JMU hit 12 3-pointers, held a 58-29 rebounding advantage, a 47-19 edge in bench points and handed out 23 assists in the win, improving to 3-1.

After giving up a quick bucket five seconds into the game to JMU's Peyton McDaniel, the Lancers built an early 10-4 lead with 6:26 to play in the first quarter on four points each from LeRoy and Laney Bone and two from Frances Ulysse. Longwood grabbed a 12-11 lead through the first media timeout before the Dukes took control.

Jamia Hazell gave JMU the lead at 14-12 with a 3-pointer at the 4:09 mark and Miller followed with another triple, while an Annalicia Goodman layup made it 19-12 with 2:47 left in the period. Miller scored again in the paint with under a minute remaining before Longwood finally broke its scoring drought with a free throw by LeRoy made it 21-13.

That free throw was the 344th of LeRoy's career, breaking Marita Meldere's school record of 343, set in 2005. LeRoy finished the night 3-for-4 from the line and is 346-of-452 (76.5 percent) for her career.

JMU led, 25-13, after one and increased their lead to 49-28 at halftime and 72-40 after three quarters.

Malea Brown, Kiki McIntyre and Janay Turner chipped in seven points apiece for the Lancers.

Longwood is back in action Sunday at Clemson at 3:30 p.m. The game will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
