HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Lancers outshot Winthrop (3-8-2, 0-6-1 Big South) 10-6 on the afternoon, and the Longwood back line only gave up two shots on target throughout the match.
After both sides went back and forth throughout the midfield in the first half,
Hailey Baltzelle broke through. The sophomore took a feed from
Alayna Palamar near the edge of the 18-yard box and blasted a shot home for a 1-0 lead late in the half. It was her first goal of the season
A little hustle helped the Lancers extend the lead to 2-0 in the second half.
Julia Gill paid off the pressure.
Victoria Drake forced a turnover five minutes after halftime and slipped a pass to Gill at the edge of the box. Gill didn't miss. It was her fourth goal of the season.
Winthrop pushed and applied pressure late, and Annabel Thomas hit home a penalty kick in the 85
th minute that cut the Lancer lead to 2-1.
Longwood's back line stiffened, and the offense managed the game over the final few minutes to preserve the road win.
WHAT THEY SAID:
"We will never apologize for a win, especially on the road, but that game had a weird energy for us," said Longwood Head Coach
Todd Dyer. "We came out really flat but still managed to go in at the half up 1-0. The second half felt like more of the same, but we still got that second goal. Winthrop kept coming and putting us under pressure, leading to a PK that made us sweat the last five minutes. By the end, it felt like we had just managed to survive. If that's what it takes to earn another three points here at the end of the season, so be it."
UP NEXT:
Longwood stays on the road for the final match of the regular season. The Lancers travel to Presbyterian to play on Wednesday, October 6 at 6 p.m. The match will air on ESPN+.
