Field Hockey Battles Indiana, Falls Short 2-0

Two Second Half Goals Give Hoosiers The Win

BLOOMINGTON, IN – The Longwood Lancers battled the Indiana Hoosiers down to the wire on Sunday morning, but ultimately lost by a score of 2-0. The match marked the second time that the two programs have faced one another, and only the second Big Ten opponent the Lancers have faced in team history.

Goals (Assists)

34' – Indiana: Sydney Keld
56' – Indiana: Sydney Keld (penalty stroke)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The first quarter was strong defensively for both sides. Lara Van Nunen recorded two saves for Longwood (2-5) off of three total shots from Indiana (6-3).

The Hoosiers began the second quarter very active offensively, generating two penalty corners in the first five minutes. However, the match would enter halftime scoreless on both sides, as both defense made shots hard to come by for Longwood and Indiana.

It wouldn't take long for Indiana to break the tie, as Sydney Keld propelled a shot past Van Nunen to put the Hoosiers up 1-0 early in the third quarter.

Despite several shots attempts from Longwood late in the fourth quarter, it wasn't enough. Another goal from Keld on a penalty stroke late in the game was the final nail for the Hoosiers, as they would go on to win 2-0.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"When we stepped up on the press as a team, it worked for us," said head coach Miranda Rigg on the Lancers' first half defensive success.

"Executing in our attacking third has to be a team effort, not just a few people running to the ball," said Rigg. "Defensively, we need to control our bodies and sticks to eliminate some potential fouls."

When asked about coming home following three straight road games, Rigg said that her team needs to "rest, recover, and get ready for another weekend of tough competition."

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

Today's match marks the second ever meeting between the two programs. The last time the Lancers have faced a Big Ten opponent came in 2018 in a loss to Rutgers.

Longwood outshot Indiana nine to eight, with Indiana's six shots on goal besting the Lancers' four.

Lara Van Nunen recorded four saves, putting her season total at 30.

Maroussia Walckiers' two shots on goal led the Lancers, and her 15 on the season lead the team.

Longwood recorded five corners in the game to Indiana's eight.

UP NEXT:

The Lancers will return home after a three-game road stint to take on Ohio University on September 23. First touch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
