RALEIGH, N.C. – Wednesday evening it was a pitching duel, that NC State capitalized on despite the one hitter performance by freshman
Er'ron Burton, taking the victory 1-0.
"Tough loss in a tight game," said Head Coach Megan Brown. "Looking forward to two days of practice before a tough conference series this weekend."
Aisha Weixlmann (11-5) started in the circle for the Wolfpack (26-13, 5-10 ACC) and ended many of the Lancers streaks at the plate. Weixlmann grabbed five strikeouts, three walks, and was hitless over the first five innings.
A game changing fifth inning saw life from both teams on offense. Home side with the bats, it was Libby Whittaker who reached on a throwing error by the Lancers, giving the Wolfpack a shot.
It was a bat held by Brittany Jackson who was the chosen one that broke the no-hitter for Burton. Jackson roped one down the right field line, grabbing the triple and RBI – putting the Wolfpack ahead late in the game.
Unable to see life on offense until it was too late, Longwood (16-19, 9-3 Big South), fell short in the Wednesday evening game across state lines. Highlighted in the circle for the Lancers, Burton (1-3) grabbed eight strikeouts, a season's second best for the freshman, and an outstanding five hitless innings against the ACC opponent.
Longwood returns to Farmville for another Big South series this Saturday and Sunday against Radford.
