Back-To-Back Games Decided By Single Run Split The Doubleheader Saturday

Devivi And Ware Come Up Clutch For Their Teams In The Late Innings, Splitting The Doubleheader Saturday

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – An exciting afternoon doubleheader between the Big South two and three seeded teams finished split after 15 innings played.

Longwood (24-21, 15-5 Big South) grabbed the game one win in the top of the seventh with a hero play made by the sophomore out of Danville, Keyley Devivi.

Devivi knocked an RBI single, scoring teammate Lauren Fox, to take the lead with two outs on the board. Unable to respond, the Camels came up short in game one.

"Strong team win in game one," said Head Coach Megan Brown. "A lot of people contributed in those key moments, and did the things we needed them to."

Game two a little different story; and it took eight innings to decide a victor.

"In game two, we had a few moments where we could have taken advantage of things a little bit better," said Brown. "Those are the areas where we can continue to grow as the season goes on, and just get better from it."

Campbell (26-16, 14-6) got its revenge in game two, taking the win 3-2 over Longwood. The win came at the expense of playing one extra inning, making it the Camel's fourth extra inning game outing in the last five games.

"It wasn't like we did anything wrong in game two, we just had opportunities that we didn't take advantage of," said Coach Brown. "Now its about, how we can go back and be more aware of where those opportunities come up where we can be clutch, execute well either offense or defense, and come out on top next time."

A walk-off single from Claudia Ware won it for the Camels. The single split the first and second basemen, scoring two, taking the lead, and win.

"Campbell's a really good program, so they don't give us a lot of opportunities," said Coach Brown. "We have to seize them when we get them. Moving forward, we want to control our own destiny as much as we can. That's why its very important to take care of each game as it comes."

Longwood, Campbell, and USC Upstate all stand just one game separated in the Big South standings following this weekend's action.

Longwood returns to Amanda Littlejohn Stadium to take on Campbell in the deciding game of the series at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Game One: Seventh Inning Finish Falls In Longwood's Favor, Due To An RBI Single Off The Bat Of Devivi

An exciting seventh inning finish in game one, put Kayley Devivi in the hero spot with a two out, RBI single up the left side, scoring the winning run for the Lancers in a 3-2 finish over the Camels.

Devivi, 2-3 at the plate, roped a single through the left side with two outs recorded, giving outfielder Lauren Fox a chance to round the bases as the winning run.

It was a quiet game through the first two innings for both teams. Mason Basdikis broke the silence with a two out, ground-rule double over the left field fence.

Unable to convert a run until the fourth inning, it was Sydney Jacobsen that rocketed one into left field for the RBI double, scoring Fox for the first time on the day.

Top of the fifth, it was another two out, triple smoked into left field, once again, off of the bat of freshman Jaden Pone. The RBI triple put the Lancers in the lead 2-0 moving into the home side of five.

Campbell saw one of its only signs of life on offense after that half for the Lancers, and it came at the cost of second basemen Samantha Fontaine.

The red-shirt freshman from California rocked a two-run dinger over the left field fence, evening the score in the bottom of the fifth.

Longwood was able to link four hitless innings to open game one, with its ace, Sydney Backstrom (17-9) starting in the circle.

Backstrom allowed four hits on a mere 27 batter faced, throwing seven strikeouts brining the super senior's grand total past the two century mark, with 203 total on the year.

For the Camels, it was Georgeanna Barefoot starting in the circle. Barefoot matched Backstrom's seven strikeouts, with a total of seven hits on her 27 batters faced in the complete game.

Game Two: Ware Wins It For Campbell With A Two Run Walk-Off In The Bottom Of The Eighth

Game two for the Lancers ended in heart break with a walk-off single off the bat of Claudia Ware scoring two to end the game after eight innings of action.

A Saturday doubleheader needed extras to depict a winner after Longwood fought back to tie things up in the top of the sixth.

Campbell lead 1-0 after four innings played. That was before another RBI double evened it up off the bat of senior Sydney Jacobsen.

Finishing after seven square at one run a piece, it was Longwood who struck first in the top side of the eighth.

Alexi Wayland, 1-4 in game two, got a hit at the right time. Following in Jacobsen's foot steps, the senior knocked an RBI double scoring Devivi, making the score 2-1 in Longwood's favor.

Bat's in the Campbell's hands - the home side executed in the extras when they needed to.

Er'ron Burton (2-5) grabbed the start for the Lancers, with Sydney Backstrom (16-10) picking up the loss.

Burton pitched a complete seven innings, with six strikeouts, no walks, allowing only four hits across the Camels offense.

For Campbell, Isabel Smith (12-6) matched a career-best 12 strikeouts, pitching the complete game for the Camels, and allowing seven hits over the 32 Longwood batters she faced Saturday afternoon.
