Wofford Edges Longwood 11-6 in Defensive Struggle

Lancer Defense Earns 13 Caused Turnovers, But Wofford Goalkeeper Tallies 13 Saves

Farmville, Va.- The Wofford Terriers beat the Longwood Lancers women's lacrosse team 11-6 in a defensive fight as the two teams battle for a playoff spot with two games to play in the Big South.

Wofford (4-10, 2-5 Big South) goalkeeper Aislinn Washburn posted a season-high 13 saves in a match that was nearly even in every statistical category as the two sides had 22 shots apiece, with each team putting 19 shots on goal.

Washburn turned aside 13, and Elisabeth Ralph and Shannon Wulf provided the lift on offense. Ralph scored five goals, and Wulf set the program record with seven assists in a game.

For Longwood (5-10, 2-5 Big South), Rachel Abraham led a defense that was credited with 13 caused turnovers of Wofford's 18 miscues. The senior totaled five caused turnovers while adding three ground balls.

On offense, Claire Libby scored four goals to lead the Lancers, but Washburn stymied the rest of Longwood's multi-faceted attack.

"Today was a disappointing loss," said Longwood head coach Elaine Jones. "We seem to be in a bit of a rut still from last week's travel and games and simply didn't connect the dots sharply enough on the field today. We'll work on getting that fixed in preparation for Gardner-Webb."

Wofford took the early lead with Ralph and Wulf netting a goal apiece in the first six minutes.

Libby evened the score with a pair of goals off feeds from Emily Cate Smith and Ainsley Rowlison, but Wofford's Leah Hurley gave the Terriers the lead after one quarter.

Hurley's goal started a 5-0 run for Wofford that gave the Terriers a hit before Haley Moomau ended the run with a goal that cut the lead to four heading into the half.

Both defenses clamped down in the third quarter, with each team giving up one goal apiece. Libby scored an unassisted goal that cut the Wofford lead to three, but the Ralph pushed it back to four with a goal with 50 seconds to go in the quarter. Wofford then held on in the fourth to finish it out.

The Lancers return to action on April 23rd when they play Gardner Webb in Boiling Springs, North Carolina. First draw is set for 1 p.m., and the game will be aired on ESPN+.
