Hormes Powers High Point Past Longwood 19-7

Preseason Offensive Player of the Year Pours in Seven Goals to Take Down Lancers

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Abbie Hormes has been a force throughout her entire High Point career on the lacrosse field, and the graduate student didn't slow down on Wednesday night against Longwood.

Hormes powered home seven goals to lead High Point (5-8, 4-1 Big South) to a 19-7 win over Longwood. She scored the first goal of the game and three goals in the first eight minutes, and the Panthers never trailed.

Kay Rosselli added three goals and three assists while Nicole Pugh chipped in with two goals and two assists apiece for the preseason favorite to win the league.

For Longwood (5-8, 2-3 Big South), Lauren Cerretani and Emily Cate Smith each had three goals apiece. Amelia Carlile added eight saves in goal to go over 100 saves in her freshman season for the Lancers, but High Point's high-octane offense proved to be too much.

Hormes, Rosselli and Pugh all scored within the first eight minutes for High Point as the Panthers ripped off an 8-0 run to start the game.

Smith answered to start a three-run goal for Longwood that trimmed the lead to 8-3, but High Point's defense limited Longwood to two goals through the middle periods. Meanwhile, High Point's offense extended the lead to 17-5 in the third period.

The Lancers played the fourth quarter even, but the damage was done to that point as High Point put the game away.

Longwood stays on the road with a tough matchup against Big South newcomer Mercer on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Lancers then return home to host Wofford on Wednesday, April 20 to host Wofford at 3 p.m.
