The Opening Tip:
  • Longwood, currently on a six-game winning streak, prepares for game one of the Big South tournament against their most recent regular season match-up, the Hampton Pirates.
  • This will be the third meeting between the Lancers and Pirates in a 12-day span.
  • Longwood has averaged 75.2 final points in the last nine games of the season - scoring 70 plus in eight of those nine.
  • Akila Smith is coming off a "senior day high" where she gathered her season-best of 29 points while adding another seven blocks to her stat sheet.
  • Smith earned the conference's Player of the Year award after ranking 3rd in the country in blocked shots, and 9th nationally in FG% (.588). She also averaged 16.8 ppg on the year, and 17.7 ppg in Big South play.
  • Longwood enters the conference tournament as the second seeded team - the first time in Big South history they have finished in the top two.

By The Numbers:
  • Longwood has had yet another historical season for the program. The team put together the best conference, and overall records since joining the Big South conference almost 10 years ago. The overall 18-11 record sits now as the best in the Division I era – this record previously beats the 16-13 overall set back in the first year Longwood was a Division I university in 2007-08.
  • Akila Smith wrote her name in the Longwood record books again with her second career triple double, the third in team history, with a 20-point, 11-rebound, 10-block effort at Sam Houston on Nov. 30.
  • Smith also became the first every Big South Player of the Year to wear a Longwood uniform. Her back-to-back Defense Player of the Year award is only the fourth time it's occurred across the Big South.
  • Tracking it all season long, Smith finished 3rd in the nation in blocked shots (89), and she was the only player in the top 50 under six feet tall.
  • Kennedy Calhoun wrote her name in the Longwood record book with 78 steals in a single-season breaking the top ten (tied for 7th currently). Calhoun is the first name to join the list since the 1999-2000 seasons. She finished second in the Big South, and 7th nationally.
  • Kyla McMakin earned her third straight First Team All-Conference accolade after putting up 26 games in double-figures. McMakin finished first in the conference in final points, averaging 18.2 ppg on the year.
  • Tra'Dayja Smith grabbed back-to-back Honorable Mention honors in the Big South after leading the conference in assists in back-to-back seasons - all season long (146). Smith record three double-doubles on the year, all with 10 points and 10 assists.
  • Five All-Conference accolades is the most ever awarded to the women's basketball program, and they have hit that now two season in a row.
