The Opening Tip:
  • Longwood took down USC Upstate in a thriller, which came down to the last 30 seconds.
  • Akila Smith defender her "Defensive Player of the Year" title grabbing seven blocks on the top ranked team in the conference, all while grabbing 13 points, going 5-11 from the field. Smith remains 4th in the country in blocked shots with 82. 
  • After two explosive performances by Tra'Dayja Smith, she backed it up with a remarkable second half showing against the Spartans. Smith came out and scored when it mattered grabbing her 18 points from the charity stripe and from three. 
  • Kennedy Calhoun added two steals during Wednesday night's victory, writing her name in the Longwood record book for steals in a single-season.
  • Both Kyla McMakin and A. Smith continue their double-digit scoring streak in the 17th win of the season for the Lancers - the most in program history in the Division I era.  
 
By The Numbers:
  • Longwood has made history yet again as they continue to build the best conference record in program history since joining the Big South almost ten years ago (14 wins). On top of that, 17-11 is the programs best record of all time since joining Division I – this record previously beats a 16-13 overall record set back in the 2007-08 season.
  • In a historical season for both Longwood men and women's program, the cherry on top, is the combined overall records  of both teams added together, stands as the single best currently in the state of Virginia right now.
  • Kennedy Calhoun wrote her name in the Longwood record book with 78 steals in a single-season breaking the top ten (tied for 8th currently) in the last outing. Calhoun ranks second in the Big South, and 6th nationally.
  • Kyla McMakin has been able to keep the streak alive during Big South play, putting together 17 straight games in a row with double-digit point totals.
  • Akila Smith has been one of the top shot blockers in the country in back-to-back seasons. This season is no different with the 5-10 forward being ranked first in the Big South with 82, ranking fourth in the country. Smith is the only forward in the top 10 under six feet tall.
  • Akila Smith wrote her name in the Longwood record books again with her second career triple double, the third in team history, with a 20-point, 11-rebound, 10-block effort at Sam Houston on Nov. 30.
  • Kyla McMakin and Akila Smith are ranked amongst the top scorers in the Big South, coming in first (McMakin, 513) and fourth (Smith, 459) for final point total. This is the second straight season the duo sees themselves in the top five.
  • Tra'Dayja Smith grabbed her second double-double of the year against North Carolina A&T last Wednesday (10 points, 10 assists). Smith remains the leading passer in the Big South for the second year in a row, with 146 assists. Smith ranks in the top 18th nationally.
