FARMVILLE, Va.- After what feels like a lot longer than nine months, Longwood baseball returns to Farmville for opening weekend this Friday through Sunday. The Lancers are preparing to host the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks for a three game home series to open up the 2022 season. The Hawks are traveling to Longwood for their first taste of collegiate baseball since 2020.

Lancer Leadoff:

• Longwood and Maryland Eastern Shore meet for a three-game series to open the 2022 regular season. 
• The two sides have met a total of nine times since 2008, with Longwood winning eight of their matchups
• The Lancers ended their 2021 season winning three of their last ten
• Longwood finished 2021 ranked with the 6th best batting average and the 7th ranked ERA by their pitching staff
• The Longwood offense ranked fourth in the Big South in hits (453) and fifth in runs scored (279).
• Longwood is returning three players that finished in the Big South's top 20 for batting average in 2021 in Harris, Schnell and Dix. Schnell also was 17th in the confernece for OBP with a .423 rating
• Longwoods pitching staff finished the 2021 season ranked 4th in strikeouts with 379, and 3rd in strikeouts looking at 107.  The Lancers pitchers also gave up the least amount of homeruns with 17. The next closest team, High Point, had 36 allowed
• This weekends games mark the first for the new coaching staff, led by Head Coach Chad Oxendine

The Last Time Out:

• Longwood is currently on a three game win streak against Maryland Eastern shore. The Lancers took three out of four in 2019 when these two clubs faced off previously. Longwood averages 5.33 runs per game scored against Maryland Eastern Shore, and gives up 2.67 when against the Hawks.

Lancers Pitching Preview:

• Andrew Potojecki will get the opening day against Maryland Eastern Shore. The redshirt sophomore boasted a team-best 3.24 ERA as a freshman in 2021, and made 13 appearances. Potojecki struck out 33 while only giving up 13 walks and holding opponents to a .254 batting average.
• Kevin Warunek, a freshman out of Gainesville, Va. will get the nod Saturday in the second game of the series, to start his Lancer career. Though his later seasons in high school were shortened due to Covid, Warunek had a minimal 1.19 ERA and averaged 1.22 strikeouts per inning, good for 10.99 k/9.
• Dominick D'Ercole will take the mound for the series finale on Sunday. D'ercole has struck out 54 batters in his two seasons in Farmville, while only walking 38. The redshirt sophomore holds a Big South Freshman of the Week title to his name.
