The Opening Tip:
  • The Lancers are entering this game in third across the Big South, directly behind USC Upstate and Campbell.
  • Akila Smith had a spectacular performance on Wednesday night last week against Charleston Southern, grabbing six of more points across four different stat categories - points (18), steals (6), assists (7), and rebounds (7). Smith followed that stat stuffing performance with another 18 point game against the Camels on Saturday.
  • Longwood prepares for Winthrop after a week break since last Saturday - the first time the team has had a break this long in 2022.
  • The last time these two teams met, it was game two in two days for Longwood, and it was junior guard Kyla McMakin who shined with 27 points following her 33 point game against Gardner-Webb.
  • The Smith duo combined for another 28 points, of the Lancers 85.

By The Numbers:
  • Kyla McMakin has been able to keep the streak alive during Big South play, grabbing her 12th game in a row with double-figure points. McMakin grabbed two season-best showings against Winthrop (27) and Gardner-Webb (33). McMakin also strung four consecutive games with 20 plus points, matching the Longwood record in doing so.
  • Akila Smith has been one of the top shot blockers in the country throughout this season. She ranks first in the Big South with 66, and is ranked sixth on the national leaderboard. Smith is the only forward in the top 10 under six feet tall.
  • Tra'Dayja Smith is the leading passer in the Big South for the second year in a row, with 116 assists on the year. Smith ranks 29th in the nation.
  • Kyla McMakin and Akila Smith are ranked amongst the top scorers in the Big South, coming in first and fourth for final point total. This is the second straight season the duo remains in the top five.

The Last Meeting:
  • In the last meeting, Longwood was able to grab three quarters scoring 20 plus, all while holding Winthrop to an 8 point quarter.
  • For the Eagles it was J'Mani and Myra Stirckland who were Winthrop's leading scorers, combining for 32 of the teams 58. Winthrop was also short five players on Sunday due to taking an abundance of caution for everyone else in the game.

Quoteables:

"To beat a number one team, you have to do things you've never done before. If that's what my team needs from me, that's what I have to do. We have to fix things on the defensive side, and on offense. When we go up against other teams we just have to emphasize on certain stuff more than we are." -Tra'Dayja Smith

"I think we just turned over the ball too much. Then they were the aggressors when getting to the free throw line. When you're down by ten, you have to make the run for it, which we did, but we have to do it without fouling so they don't get points back on the other end. We definitely got better today, specifically against them and stopping the things they try to do to us." -Head Coach Rebecca Tillett
