Longwood Falls 83-43 On The Road At Wake Forest

Lancers Unable To Respond To Second Half Push By Demon Deacons

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Longwood Lancers women's basketball team lost tonight by a score of 83-43 to the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. After battling through a closely contested first half, an offensive surge in the third quarter helped seal the win for Wake Forest.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Longwood (1-8) played stout defense to begin the game, only allowing one field goal through the first six minutes of play. Anne-Hamilton LeRoy provided the first two buckets of the night for the Lancers, and Longwood held a lead six minutes into the frame. However, a late run and two Wake Forest (8-3) triples (including a four-point play by Jewel Spear) propelled the Demon Deacons to a 15-8 lead after the first quarter.

The two teams traded points to open the frame, including a Bailey Williams triple to set the score at 20-13 in favor of Wake Forest. Following this, the Deacons orchestrated a 7-point mini-run to extend their lead to 14. However, Longwood wouldn't go away easily, as several trips to the line by Anne-Hamilton LeRoy and an Adriana Shipp-Davis three-pointer kept the Lancers within 12 at halftime.

Wake Forest opened the third on a fast note, now playing a tight press defense and began the frame with a 9-0 run. A tough take from freshman Chardonnay Hartley added the first points of the third for the Lancers about two minutes in, but the Deacons would add 12 more points following this to extend their lead to 31. Wake Forest maintained a lead of 30+ for the remainder of the quarter, and the lead they built in the third proved to be too much for Longwood to overcome.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"Before the game, we had talked about what our players' expectations were for each other, and playing with urgency was one of the things [our players] said they wanted to do tonight," said head coach Erika Lang-Montgomery on Longwood's active start to tonight's game. "I thought we were active defensively, turned them over a couple times, and moved the ball the way I wanted us to move it [in the first half]."

"Wake Forest did a good job of changing their defense," said Lang-Montgomery on Wake Forest's second half press defense. "It kind of shocked us a little bit and we didn't take care of the ball."

"Anytime we have the opportunity to play at home, it's something that we get excited about," said Lang-Montgomery on Longwood's upcoming bout against William & Mary on Sunday. "We want to have that same sense of urgency that we started with tonight…we are excited to host another in-state rival on our home court."
