BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Longwood Lancers women's basketball team fell to the #11 Virginia Tech Hokies by a score of 89-28 in Blacksburg. The Lancers played strong defensively early in the game, but it was the Hokies' 5th nationally ranked defense that made the difference.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Longwood (1-5) began the game playing stout defense, with the score 7-2 in favor of Virginia Tech (6-0) at the first media timeout. Although the Lancers were unable to generate much offense in the first frame, their effort on the defensive end was evident throughout the quarter. Longwood forced tough shots and made the Hokies earn points from the line, leading to a 20-4 advantage for Virginia Tech after the first quarter.

The Lancers struck first in the second quarter thanks to an Alyssa Chapman three-point shot. However, the Hokies kept the lid shut for Longwood, propelled by their 5th ranked defense in the nation. A Bailey Williams triple with nine seconds remaining in the first half would put the score at 41-10 in favor of the Hokies at halftime.

Longwood kept up with the Hokies to start the second half, as each team scored 11 points through the first five minutes of the third. However, Virginia Tech went on to score ten unanswered to end the frame. The Hokie lead proved to be too much headed into the fourth, and the Lancers would fall in today's Commonwealth matchup.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"I thought we were really active and scrambling [defensively]," said head coach Erika Lang-Montgomery on the team's defensive effort. "Our energy was really good, and we definitely want to have that every night."

"There's no place like home, so we're excited to get back to Farmville," said Lang-Montgomery on Longwood's next bout against Drexel. "Our offense needs to improve and get better…we're going to work on shooting and finding better options offensively."

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

Tonight's game marks the 12th all-time matchup between the Lancers and the Hokies.
