HOW IT HAPPENED:

The scoring began first for Ohio (0-2), who opened the game on a 12-4 run, only surrendering four free throws to Longwood (1-1). Following their hot start, the Lancers defense held the Bobcats scoreless for three and a half minutes, scoring several layups in the process to cut the lead to two. However, a Kendall Hale three pointer and two free throws gave Ohio a 17-10 lead after the first quarter.

Longwood began the second quarter hot, going on an 8-0 run over the first five minutes of the frame to lead 20-17. The Bobcats started to pick it up a bit following the run, but six points from freshman Chardonnay Hartley in the quarter helped the Lancers maintain a 33-28 headed into the locker room.

The third quarter provided even more fireworks to an already exciting affair, as four lead changes would take place throughout the frame. The Lancers were able to tie the game with forty seconds remaining in the quarter, but two free throws and a Caitlyn Kroll layup gave Ohio a four-point advantage after three quarters.

The game remained a seesaw affair in the fourth quarter, with the biggest lead for either team being a mere three points. Bailey Williams electrified the crowd with just under six minutes to go with a steal and 90-foot sprint to the other basket to tie the game at 57 apiece. As both teams kept trading buckets down the stretch, the Lancers eventually found themselves down by one with 12 seconds remaining in the game. The ball was inbounded to Janay Turner, who drove to her right and converted on a contested layup to give Longwood the lead with six seconds left in the game. On the ensuing possession, Longwood held strong defensively, and the Lancers secured their first win of the 2022-23 season.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"We needed to buckle down and get the stop," said head coach Erika Lang-Montgomery of the Lancers' final possession. "We told them to be ready to switch if they put the ball on the floor…play hands straight up, don't foul, and grab the rebound and hold on tight."

"I knew it was going in," said Janay Turner after her game-winning layup. "My coach had trust in me, she drew up a nice play for us and she left it up to me to make the read. I did what I could, and it went in."

"We've found what our identity is," said Lang-Montgomery. "We can be a gritty, hard-nosed defensive team and that's got to come with us this Saturday when we take on Towson."
