HOW IT HAPPENED:
Longwood (5-13) was the more aggressive team early, setting the tone with two consecutive goals.
Maroussia Walckiers and
Ireland McDermott both converted on their penalty corner chances within the first ten minutes of play to quickly give the Lancers a 2-0 lead headed into the second quarter.
After conceding two quick scores, Central Michigan (2-16) was able to chip into the Lancer lead when Kaitlyn Bowker scored her fourth goal of the season early in the second quarter. However, this would not last long for the Chippewas, as
Sophia Loscher tapped a rebound behind the net to push the lead back to two goals. Longwood dominated possession for the rest of the quarter, generating three corners and five shots following Loscher's goal, and the score would remain 3-1 headed into the break in favor of the Lancers.
Despite out-shooting the Chippewas three to one in the third quarter, the Lancers would concede a goal to Kate Biglin of Central Michigan 11 minutes into the frame. Despite getting two chances on corners early in the fourth, the Chippewas' offense would be outshined by Longwood the rest of the way. Three corners and seven shots on goal in the fourth quarter provided more chances for an already potent offensive attack for the Lancers.
Floor Schouten and
Maroussia Walckiers both found the back of the net late in the fourth, and their scores would be the icing on the cake for Longwood, winning by a score of 5-2.
