The Opening Tip:
  • Despite the ultimate pressure from defense, Kyla McMakin has been a standout option for the Lancers offensively, stringing six games in a row with double-digit scoring (every conference game).
  • Adriana Shipp was a spark off the bench in the most recent loss against USC Upstate, hitting a three right away, and grabbing 12 final points - her fourth time this season doing so.
  • Tra'Dayja Smith added to her point total on the year with 12 points. Smith also served four assists in the Upstate game making it her 63rd time with three or more assists in a game. Smith leads the Big South in assists (87), and holds the Longwood record for assists in a single season and is third in career assists with 409.
  • Despite fouling out early in the fourth, Akila Smith grabbed two more blocks adding to her season total of 51. Smith remains ranked fifth in the nation in blocked shots in the 2021-22 season.
 By The Numbers:
  • Akila Smith has been one of the top shot blockers in the country throughout this season. She ranks first in the Big South with 51, and is ranked fifth nationally.
  • Tra'Dayja Smith is the leading passer in the Big South for the second year in a row, with 87 assists on the year, and is ranked 25th nationally.
  • Kyla McMakin and Akila Smith are ranked amongst the top final scorers in the Big South. McMakin put together her sixth game in a row in double-digits after grabbing 21 against USC Upstate. This is the second straight season the duo remains in the top five.
  • Kennedy Calhoun has been a menace to opposing guards defensively, and has made a stance for herself going into conference play. Calhoun now has 50 steals (2.94 spg) and is ranked 10th nationally for steals - as a freshman point guard.
  • Adriana Shipp was hot off the bench in the game against the Spartans. Shipp hit a three right off the bench and went 2-3 from behind the arch. Finished with 12 points, Ship collected her fourth game this season getting double-digits.
  • Akila Smith wrote her name in the Longwood record books again with her second career triple double, the third in team history, with a 20-point, 11-rebound, 10-block effort at Sam Houston on Nov. 30.
  • Following the opening week in conference play, Smith averaged a double-double against opponents, making it five total for her on the year.

Quoteables:

"I think we know what's going on with us, and we have people on the team working hard on it. We need to work on our leadership and togetherness in the tough moments. In the second half, we saw leaders actively doing their part. Sometimes in the process when a team is trying to fix an issue it takes longer than anyone wants it to take and you just don't get the results immediately." -Head Coach Rebecca Tillett
