Dix Named Among Big South's Top Players

Baseball /
FARMVILLE, Va. – Eliot Dix spent the season swatting baseballs all over baseball stadiums across the region, and now Longwood's best hitter earned a spot on the All-Big South second team, the conference office announced on Tuesday afternoon. Andrew Gorham was also named to the Big South All-Academic Team.

Dix swung the bat with a vengeance this spring, powering the Lancer lineup while leading the team in a variety of offensive categories, including both batting average and home runs. His .340 batting average ranked 12th in the Big South, and his 39 RBI were tied for 11th in the league.

With runners on base, Dix was a menace, hitting better than .440 with runners on throughout the season, and that number only went up with runners in scoring position. He averaged nearly an RBI per game, with his 39 RBI coming in 41 games, all starts. In addition, he cranked six home runs, best on the team, to go with six doubles and 15 walks against only 19 strikeouts in 162 at bats. He had a team-best 55 hits as well.

At the beginning of the season, Dix announced his presence with a humongous opening weekend at The Citadel, as the Mapelwood, New Jersey native went 6-11 at the plate with nine RBI. On opening day, he hit a pair of homers while driving in 6 RBI and scoring three runs.

He closed the season strong as well by reaching base safely in the team's final 22 games. He had five different hitting streaks of at least five games or more throughout the spring, and he was in the midst of a seven-game hitting streak through the final game of the year.

Those streaks were all part of a season where he led Longwood with 18 multi-hit games and tied for the team lead with nine multi-RBI games. His consistency allowed him to drive in runs in 24 separate games, and he was only hitless in back-to-back games once.

Dix becomes the first to earn All-Big South second team honors since right-handed pitcher Cody Wager did so back in the 2017 season. Antwaun Tucker was named an honorable mention back in 2019.

For Gorham, he earned a spot on the All-Academic team on the strength of a 3.851 cumulative GPA while also playing in the outfield in 37 games for the Lancers. He was named to the President's List this fall while also being named to the Dean's List this spring.

On the field, Gorham hit .207 with 11 RBI. He had a pair of triples to go with three doubles. This spring, he graduated with his degree in Business Administration. The Westford, Massachusetts native has been named to the President's List twice and Dean's List twice since transferring to Longwood.

The Lancers are set to return 30 players heading into the 2021-22 academic year, including the team's top hitters.
