Lancer Offense Erupts in Home Finale with 8-1 Win over Bellarmine

Karly Harwood and Kolbey Donahue each tally hat ricks in blow out win

FARMVILLE, Va. – On Saturday morning at Elizabeth Burger Jackson field, Longwood field hockey played their final home game of the spring season.

Their nets could certainly use the break.

The Lancer offense erupted for eight goals as they blew away Bellarmine 8-1 on Saturday morning. Karly Harwood and Kolbey Donahue each tallied their first career hat tricks, while Hunter-Paige Johnson and Ana Paula Lazaro each tallied their first career goals in the blow out win.

The eight goals are the most the Lancers (5-5) have scored since Oct. 28, 2012 when they matched the feat in an 8-1 win over Appalachian State, and the most they have scored since joining the Mid-American Conference in 2014. Bellarmine (0-11) will join Longwood as an affiliate member of MAC field hockey next season.

The Lancers racked up 20 shots on Saturday, their most this season and their fourth time tallying double-digit shot attempts. Ten different Lancers recorded shots, also a season high, while four players attempted at least three. The Lancers also set a season-high with nine assists, coming from four different players. Jamie Wright picked up a career-best three assists, while Kylie Levine, Isis Vrolijks, and Luna Lopez all tallied two.

"It was nice to end our home season with a win," said Longwood head coach Iain Byers. "It was a great performance today, and we are excited to head to Central Michigan and keep it going."

The Lancers came flying out of the gates on Saturday morning, as Harwood struck twice in the opening six minutes to give Longwood an early 2-0 lead. Vrolijks assisted on both Harwood goals to open the game, including a slick feed after faking out Knight goalkeeper Breanna McWhorter that allowed Harwood to strike a shot into an open net.

Donahue made it 3-0 in the first quarter, blasting home her second goal of the season on a penalty corner shot nine minutes into the game. Grace Dukes would answer for Bellarmine with their lone goal of the game late in the first, as the Lancers led 3-1 after 15 minutes of play.

Longwood blew the game open in the second quarter, scoring twice while not allowing a shot. Harwood got it started, completing her hat trick in just 21:47 of play after slamming home a feed from Jamie Wright to give the Lancers a 4-1 lead. Donahue added her second penalty corner goal of the game with just over three minutes to play, as Longwood took a 5-1 lead into the break.

Two players picked their first career goals for Longwood in the third quarter. Lazaro received a pass from fellow Mendonza, Argentina native Lopez and lifted a shot past the Bellarmine defense and into the back of the net for the sixth Lancer goal. Johnson made it seven later in the quarter, getting to the front of the net and burying a baseline feed from Wright for her first career goal and became the fifth Lancer freshman to find the back of the net in 2021.

Donahue capped the Longwood offense in the fourth, scoring her third of the game, all on penalty corner shots, to extend the Longwood lead to 8-1. The junior has now scored four goals this season, and has tallied 26 shots while also anchoring the Longwood backline.

That backline, led by Donahue, Rio Weber, Lazaro, and Levine held Bellarmine to just two shots and one goal. Goalkeeper Madison Nuckols was the beneficiary, making a save in her third win of the season. Every position player on Longwood's roster logged minutes on Saturday, including the collegiate debut for Sydney Paul who recorded a shot.

With their home schedule and non-conference slate completed, the Lancers will hit the road for their final three matchups, starting at Central Michigan on Tuesday, April 20 at 1 p.m. in Mount Pleasant, Mich. Originally scheduled as a two game series from April 2-3, the teams will play just once before Longwood heads to Boone, N.C. for their final series against Appalachian State.
