FARMVILLE, Va. – It's been more than a year since Longwood fans have been able to see Lancer men's basketball alum and Willett Hall favorite
Shabooty Phillips on the hardwood.
Starting this Friday, April 2, they'll have a chance to watch the former Lancer fan-favorite in action again.
Phillips, who was a key contributor to each of head coach
Griff Aldrich's first two history-making Longwood teams in 2018-19 and 2019-20, will represent the Lancers and the Big South Conference in the 2021 Dos Equis 3X3U National Championship tournament at the Pavilion in Indianapolis on April 2-4.
A product of Houston, Texas, and an All-Big South honorable mention point guard during his time as a Lancer, Phillips will be part of the four-man ACC/Big South team alongside Eric Hamilton (Pitt), TJ Gibbs (Notre Dame) and Brandon Robinson (North Carolina). That quartet makes up part of field of 64 former college players taking part in the tournament who have elected to begin their professional basketball careers.
Phillips, who graduated from Longwood in May 2020 with a degree in sociology, earned a spot in the tournament on the strength of a two-year Lancer career in which he averaged 12.2 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game as Longwood's starting point guard. After transferring to Longwood as a junior in Aldrich's first year, he propelled the program to its first-ever Division I postseason berth when the Lancers earned an invitation to the 2019 College Basketball Invitational and advanced to the tournament's quarterfinal round.
As a senior, Phillips captained the squad to a record fourth-place Big South finish and nine Big South wins, which was also a program record at the time until the 2020-21 Lancers surpassed that benchmark with a 10-10 league finish.
At the 3X3U National Championship, Phillips and his ACC/Big South teammates will be part of a 16-team field representing all 32 Division I conferences and competing for their share of $150,000 at the FIBA-sanctioned tournament. Phillips and teammates are guaranteed at least eight games during the tournament, building up to Sunday's bracket-style championship day.
Phillips' ACC/Big South squad was assigned to the tournament's "Pool B" where they will compete against seven other teams representing the ASUN/Sun Belt, Big Ten/MAC, Colonial/Northeast, Mountain West/WAC, Pac-12/WCC, SEC/SoCon, and Summit League/Ohio Valley. Following those seven games, which take place Friday and Saturday, all teams will be seeded based on records and advance to Sunday's single-elimination battle for the top prize.
All pool-play games and Sunday's knockout rounds will air on Twitter, while the semifinals and championship game will air on ESPN2.
The Tournament has created COVID-19 protocols that are consistent with local guidelines and designed to maximize the health and safety of participating players. The plan includes multiple rounds of testing for participating players, along with physical distancing recommendations and other health and safety measures that adhere to local regulations.
