Lancers Drop Big South Opener to Presbyterian

FARMVILLE, Va. - Hosting their first Big South dual on their new Lancer Courts, Longwood women's tennis fell to Presbyterian on Saturday afternoon. 

Longwood pair Emma Nurgazieva and Zoe Barton improved to 2-0 as a doubles pair, beating the Blue Hose's Samantha Calais and Alexa Wilson 6-3 to tie the doubles competition at 1-1 after Presbyterian's Jessica Leeman and Lucianna Piedra won the first doubles match.  However, Beth Lacey and Zeba Jamal won the third and deciding doubles match to take a 1-0 lead into singles play.

The Blue Hose earned their second and third points as Lucianna Piedra and Beth Lacey picked up wins in the fifth and sixth positions over Longwood's Crystal Nzewi and Nina Hederich. The match-clinching decision came in the third slot, as Jessica Leeman bested Longwood's Adelaide Thuilot seal Presbyterian's fourth point. 

Two Lancers went the distance in singles play, led by Nurgazieva. Playing in the first position, the junior won the opening set over Jamal 6-3. Jamal responded with a 6-1 set two win, setting up a third and deciding set which Jamal was able to squeak out, 10-8. 

In the fourth spot, Longwood's Barton battled back from a 6-0 set one loss to return the favor, giving Leeman a 6-0 second set loss. However, Leeman responded with a 6-3 third set to earn her fourth victory of the season. 

Up next for Longwood is a non-conference matchup with North Carolina A&T on Sunday, March 14 at the Lancer Courts.
