N.C. Central Outlasts Longwood, 4-3

DURHAM, N.C. - Led by four singles wins, N.C. Central was able to battle back from a doubles competition loss to beat Longwood 4-3 on Friday afternoon at the NCCU Tennis Courts. 

Lancer pair Emma Nurgazieva and Maria Saez got Longwood on the board first, sweeping the Eagles' Maru Berghaus and Ivana Dragovic 6-0, as Zoe Barton and Nina Hederich went on to secure the doubles point by default and give the Lancers (1-3) a 1-0 lead. 

However, after Hederich tallied the second Lancer win by default in the sixth position,  N.C. Central (1-4) responded by winning the first two completed singles matches to tie Longwood, 2-2. Nurgazieva put the Lancers back in the lead, improving to 2-0 in the first position with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Maru Berghaus to give Longwood a 3-2 lead. 

The Eagles rallied in the final two matches, as Dragovic and Maria Picazo won in the fourth and fifth slot to ice the victory, 4-3. 

Friday's dual was the final tuneup for the Lancers, who are right back in action on Saturday, March 6 at 1 p.m. when they host Presbyterian, their first conference clash since beating USC Upstate 4-3 in a come-from-behind win on March 8, 2020. The dual will serve as just the second match on Longwood's new Lancer Courts, which they christened with a 7-0 victory over Southern Virginia on Feb. 25.
