Lancer Leadoff
  • Longwood opens up Big South play on the road at Charleston Southern, the same team that they close the season against.
  • The Lancers will play their next eight on the road for a road-heavy start to March. The team also opened the season on the road.
  • The Lancer offense leads the Big South with 53 runs scored and 72 hits through eight games.
  • Hunter Gilliam leads the Big South in hits with 15, with Jack Schnell sitting second at 13. Gilliam also holds a .445 batting average and a team-best 10 RBI. Eliot Dix sits second on the team with nine RBI.
  • Dix was named the Big South Freshman of the Week after opening weekend by going 6-11 at the plate with his first two collegiate home runs to go with nine RBI.
  • Longwood is playing a modified schedule that features 40 Big South games to 10 non-conference tilts.
  • Under head coach Ryan Mau, Longwood's pitching staff has ranked at or near the top of the Big South in strikeouts, finishing in the top three of the league four times in his six seasons at the helm.
By The Numbers
  • Longwood opens up conference play as part of a 40-game conference schedule with a trip to Charleston Southern. The two teams haven't played since 2019 when the Lancers won two of three against the Bucs.
  • The Lancers are embarking on an eight-game road swing, with seven of those contests being Big South games. After Charleston Southern, the team travels to Norfolk State, Presbyterian and High Point before returning to Farmville to take on Winthrop on March 19.
  • The Lancers play 24 of their 50 games on the road this season and have no neutral-site games.
  • Longwood leads the Big South with 72 base hits and has racked up double digit hits in three of its eight games this season. The Lancers posted 12 hits in the opener and totaled 15 against NC Central before putting up 12 hits against Oakland in the series finale. In 2020, the team had at least 10 hits eight times in 17 games. In 2019, the team didn't notch 10 hits or more until its 13th game.
  • The Lancers hold a .265 batting average as a team, good for third in the conference. The team has posted 47 RBI, tops in the league, while also scoring a league-best 53 runs.
  • Longwood's offense tied for third in the Big South with 150 hits in 2020 while ranking fourth in hits per game with 8.8. The team was also third in RBI with 77.
  • Hunter Gilliam has been on a tear to start the 2021 season. The sophomore ranks second in the Big South through eight games with a .455 batting average while also leading the league with 15 hits and 10 RBI. He is the only player with double digit RBI in the Big South.
  • He was a force unto himself in Longwood's 22-14 win over North Carolina Central. The 6'3, 235 pound first baseman racked up five hits, tying a team record for hits in a game. He becomes the first Lancer to have a five-hit game since Colton Konvicka in 2013 against High Point.
  • In addition, Gilliam drove in six runs, including a towering three-run homer to dead center. He finished the game 5-6 to bump his average up to .529 (9-17) on the season. His eight RBI are second on the team, and he is tied with Jack Schnell with seven runs scored.
  • Jack Schnell has been a steadying presence in the middle of Longwood's lineup to start 2021. The left-handed hitting outfielder is eighth in the Big South with a .419 batting average through eight games. He is second behind teammate Hunter Gilliam with 13 hits in the Big South.
  • Schnell has had a nose for home plate and has scored a conference-leading 10 times, the only player with at least 10 runs scored.
  • Plus, Schnell has driven in seven runs, good for a tie for fifth in the conference.
  • In the team's second game of the season, Schnell drove in the go-ahead run in the 10th inning with an RBI double to the left field corner at The Citadel.
  • The Lancers lead the Big South with 53 runs scored thanks to a trio of players who all rank in the top five in the conference in runs scored: Jack Schnell, Hunter Gilliam and Cullan Wadsworth.
  • Schnell leads the league with 10 runs scored, including a career best five against NC Central.
  • Wadsworth sits in second, having turned seven hits, three walks and two hit by pitches into nine runs.
  • Gilliam is tied for fourth with seven runs scored.
  • The Lancers rank third in the Big South with a .381 on-base percentage led by a conference-best 34 walks. In addition, batters have been hit by a pitch 20 times, tops in the Big South.
  • Michael Peterson has been hit by a pitch a league-high five times, and he is tied for second with six walks drawn.
  • Schnell is part of the four-way tie with Peterson for second in the Big South with six walks drawn.
Scouting Charleston Southern
  • Longwood travels to Charleston Southern to open conference play in the first week of March. It opens up eight straight on the road for the Lancers.
  • Charleston Southern is coming off a pause due to COVID-19 concerns. The team opened against Boston College at Shipyard Park in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
  • Last season, Charleston Southern went 7-12 in non-conference play prior to the cancellation of the season by the Big South due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Bucs split a four-game series against Kansas amidst those 19 games.
  • This season, Charleston Southern was swept in their three-game series against Boston College. The team surrendered double digit runs in all three games.
  • RJ Petit was selected as the Big South Preseason Pitcher of the Year for the second straight season. He posted a 2.45 ERA as a freshman in 2019 while holding batters to a .163 batting average over 20 appearances with two starts and five saves. Last season, he started in the bullpen before the season was canceled prior to his assuming a starting role. This season, Petit went 4.1 innings against Boston College in his start. He struck out five against five hits and three walks that led to five runs, four earned.
  • Daniel Padysak and Krishna Raj, the other two starters, each totaled three innings of work against Boston College. Out of the bullpen, no reliever made more than one appearance against Boston College. Sam Massey and Chase Gockel both did not allow an earned run in multi-inning relief appearances, with Glockel striking out four to no walks.
  • Offensively, freshman Tyrell Brewer leads the way with a .500 (5-10) batting average over three games. He scored two of the team's seven runs. No other starter is hitting above .300, although Christian Maggio scored a pair of runs in seven at bats.
