FARMVILLE, Va. - UNC Asheville used a heavily contested doubles point and a strong singles performance to beat Longwood women's tennis 6-1 on Saturday afternoon at the New Lancer Courts. 

After the Bulldogs (4-5) captured the first doubles match with a 6-1 win in the first position, Maria Saez and Nina Hederich responded with a 6-2 win over Lize Morkel and Taylor Love to level set up the decisive third match. In a thrilling clincher, Brianna Taranto and Beatrice Faureng outlasted Longwood's Adelaide Thuilot and Crystal Nzewi, 7-6 in a tiebreak win to earn the doubles point for Asheville. 

Moving into singles play, Bulldog ace Morkel beat Emma Nurgazieva, 6-0, 6-3 in the first slot to double the Asheville lead, 2-0. The win snapped a two-match winning streak for Nurgazieva, who still holds a strong 3-2 record in the first position. 

In the fifth slot, Linge Steenkamp earned the third Bulldog point with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Alexandra Hincu to pull the Bulldogs within a point of clinching. Rosie Dickson delivered in the sixth spot, beating Hederich 6-1, 6-2 to clinch the win for Asheville.

Adelaide Thuilot continued to stay hot for the Lancers (3-6), picking up her third-consecutive win in the third position with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Anastasia Horvat. The freshman now holds a 4-2 record in the third slot, and a 4-4 record overall. 

The Lancers will continue their home stand on Sunday, March 28 when they host Bluefield State. Play is set to begin at 2 p.m. at the New Lancer Courts.
