Lancer Leadoff
  • Longwood hosts Winthrop for a three-game series which marks the first home games of March for the Lancers.
  • The Lancers are scheduled to make a return trip to Rock Hill for a three-game series later in the season, May 14 and 15.
  • Coming into Saturday, Longwood had played seven straight away from Buddy Bolding Stadium and now are at home for six of their next seven.
  • Longwood comes into the weekend tied for second in the Big South with 120 hits. Hunter Gilliam leads the way for Longwood with 22 hits, with eight going for extra bases.
  • The Lancers rank second in the Big South in runs, totaling 86 on the season. Cullan Wadsworth leads the team with 14. Hunter Gilliam has scored 12 times while Jack Schnell has touched home plate 11 times.
  • Dillon Champagne was named the Big South Reliever of the Week following a two-save week that saw him total five strikeouts in two scoreless innings of work.
  • Longwood ranks third in strikeouts in the Big South, continuing a trend under head coach Ryan Mau. The team has ranked in the top three in the league four times in the past six seasons.

  • High Point's pitching staff shut down Longwood's offense and limited the Lancers to two hits on Tuesday night, March 16. The Panthers used timely swings to pull away in a 9-2 win. A two-run home run in the fifth and a bases-loaded double in the seventh allowed High Point to create separation after a tight first four innings.

  • The Lancers hold a .360 on-base percentage, good for fourth in the Big South, through 15 games.
  • As a team, Longwood is second in the Big South with 62 walks drawn. In addition, the team is tied for the league lead after being hit by a pitch 32 times.
  • Michael Peterson has drawn nearly 20 percent of the team's walks by himself. The sophomore sits second in the Big South with 12 walks drawn, and he is tied for second in the Big South after being hit by a pitch six times.
  • Nate Blakeney is tied for eighth in the Big South with nine walks drawn.
  • Hunter Gilliam and Cullan Wadsworth have each been hit by a pitch four times, tied for seventh in the conference.
  • Longwood is tied for second in the Big South with 120 base hits and has racked up double digit hits in six of its 15 games this season. The team's season high came against NC Central, when they knocked out 15 hits.
  • The Lancers hold a .242 batting average as a team while combining for 73 RBI, third in the league.
  • Longwood's offense tied for third in the Big South with 150 hits in 2020 while ranking fourth in hits per game with 8.8. The team was also third in RBI with 77.

  • Michael Peterson leads the way on the bases for Longwood, posting a team-best five stolen bases on seven attempts. The speedster ranks second in the league in stolen bases.
  • Nine different players have stolen a base for Longwood.
  • Meanwhile, Hunter Gilliam has cranked three triples to lead both Longwood and the Big South. The big first baseman hit triples in back-to-back games against Norfolk State on March 9 and March 14 (game one) in addition to his triple on opening day at The Citadel.
  • Andrew Gorham is tied for second in the league with two triples. Drayven Kowalski and Cullan Wadsworth have the other two triples for the Lancers.
  • Dylan Saale is tied for eighth in the Big South with 20 strikeouts, with six of those strikeouts looking. His 9.64 strikeouts per game rank seventh in the league.
  • As a team, Longwood is third in strikeouts (122), strikeouts looking (32) and strikeouts per nine innings (8.71) to continue a trend under head coach Ryan Mau. The Lancers have ranked in the top three of the Big South in strikeouts four times in the previous six seasons

  • The Lancers have consistently ranked near the top of the Big South in strikeouts. In 2019, the Lancers were fourth with 411 K's. In 2018, the Lancers were third with 468 K's. In 2017, Longwood led the Big South with 511 punchouts in 2017, breaking the school's D-I record of 440.  That season, Longwood was also third in the nation with 9.9 strikeouts per nine innings. The Lancers were fifth in the Big South in 2016 with 404 K's and third in 2015 with 440 K's.

Scouting Winthrop
  • Longwood and Winthrop meet for a three-game series this weekend, one of two scheduled series on the season for the two sides.
  • The Lancers travel to Rock Hill, S.C. on May 14-15 for a three-game series with the Eagles.
  • Winthrop has not played since March 2 in a 19-8 loss to South Carolina in Rock Hill. The Eagles have yet to play a conference foe after playing Appalachian State and Towson three times apiece with two games against South Carolina mixed in.
  • The Eagles were picked to finish second in the Big South preseason poll with 82 points and one first place vote, seven points behind Campbell at 89.
  • On offense, Winthrop has hit three homers while posting a .243 batting average. Five players have started all eight games for the team.
  • Dillon Morton leads the way with a .400 batting average while also driving in four runs and drawing seven walks. He is one of two players with multiple doubles, with three, and has hit a home run to go with a team-best six runs.
  • Andrew Jenner is second on the team with a .355 batting average while notching a team-best 11 hits. He has scored five times while driving in three more.
  • Tyler Blaker (.208 average) and Joe McNamara (.278 average) have the other two home runs for Winthrop.
  • Projected game one starter Tyler Jones holds a 2.79 ERA through two appearances, both starts. He has struck out a team-high nine through 9.2 innings of work while walking six and giving up three runs on four hits. Opponents are only hitting .129 against the sophomore.
  • Projected game two starter Andrew Coker holds an 8.44 ERA through two appearances, both starts, that have spanned 5.1 innings. He has struck out three to 10 hits that have led to seven runs, five earned.
  • Out of the bullpen, Parker Kruglewicz has not allowed a run in three relief innings with four strikeouts to two walks and three hits. Dalton Mims has made three appearances, posting a 1.69 ERA in 5.1 innings with five strikeouts to one run allowed. Jason Crumley, Garrett Gainey and Dalton Skinner have made four relief appearances out of the pen. Crumley has a 4.50 ERA in 6.0 innings, while Gainey holds a 6.23 ERA in 4.1 innings. Skinner has a start in addition to his four relief outings, leading to a 7.88 ERA in 8.0 innings.
