FARMVILLE, Va. – Backed by a 3-0 showing from the top half of its singles rotation, Longwood (3-4) took down North Carolina A&T 5-2 Sunday afternoon at the New Lancer courts.
The win was Longwood's second in as many days following Saturday's 7-0 sweep of Chowan and improved the Lancers to 3-1 at their new home venue that opened this spring.
Longwood (3-4) got straight-set sweeps at each of the top four singles slots, including back-to-back-to-back wins at Nos. 1, 2 and 3 that clinched the win. Keying that effort from the top was
Guilherme Sergio, who cruised past his No. 1 counterpart Vasil Ivanov 6-3, 6-2 for his second win of the day. Sergio also partnered with
Ernest Rocabert at Longwood's No. 2 doubles slot for a 6-0 sweep of Nicolas Arduh and Eadwyn Bacar as part of a three-win day in doubles that jetted the Lancers to an early 1-0 lead.
Joining Sergio in Longwood's early rally was
Guillermo Cagigas, who clinched the win at No. 2 over Esteban Lopez 6-2, 6-4 in singles after a matching 6-0 doubles win of his own alongside freshman teammate Andrew Illett. Lancer
Ignacio Sandoval, playing at the No. 3 position, won 6-2, 6-0 over Arduh in singles to put Longwood up 3-0 before Cagigas' clincher.
The win for Sandoval was his fifth in the past six matches, during which he has played at the Nos. 1, 2 and 3 positions. Meanwhile, Sergio also won for the fourth time in his past fie outings, playing exclusively at the Nos. 1 and 2 spots.
After those singles wins, and with a 4-0 lead in hand, Rocabert picked up one more point for good measure with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 4 over Bacar before the Aggies (0-6) finally got on the board with wins at No. 5 and No. 6. Both of those were three-set grinds with marathon third sets, as Ogundele outlasted Illett 3-6, 6-3 10-8 at No. 5 and Nolan Martino pulled out a 5-7, 7-5, 10-3 win over
Sebastian Mezo at No. 6.
After playing back-to-back days and three times since Thursday, the Lancers will now get a brief reprieve before hosting Norfolk State this Friday at 2 p.m. That will be the third of four straight home matches.
