FARMVILLE, Va. – UNC Asheville outlasted Longwood men's tennis on Sunday afternoon, winning 5-2 at the New Lancer Courts.
With the win, the Bulldogs improved to 5-4, including a 2-0 mark in Big South play.
Longwood (4-5) started the match strong, as Lancer pair
Ernest Rocabert and
Guilherme Sergio won the opening doubles match 6-4. However, the Bulldogs rallied to win the next two double matches, earning the opening point to take a 1-0 lead into singles play.
The top of the Lancer lineup was sharp, as Longwood took both the first position and second position matches. Sergio Guilherme improved to 5-3, including an impressive 4-2 mark in the first slot with his 6-4, 6-3 win over Asheville's Oli Nolan. The Lancer ace has now won four matches in a row.
Ignacio Sandoval followed with his team-best sixth win of the season, edging out 2019 All-Big South singles team member Charlie Morkel 6-2, 6-3 to earn Longwood's second point. Sandoval is now 4-0 in the second slot for Longwood, and has extended his winning streak to three matches in singles.
However, Asheville rallied in the remaining singles matches to clinch the match. The Bulldogs won the remaining four single bouts to ice the match at 5-2, ending Longwood's winning streak at two.
