Lancer Leadoff
  • Longwood takes on Oakland in a four-game series to wrap up a five game homestand to start the season.
  • The team's 3-1 start is the best since a 5-0 start in 2010, prior to joining the Big South Conference.
  • Longwood's offense has put up 44 runs through four games on 43 hits. Both totals lead the Big South. The 44 runs are the most through four games since 1996.
  • Eliot Dix, Hunter Gilliam and Jack Schnell lead the Big South in RBI, with Dix leading the team with nine, Gilliam with 8 and Schnell with 7.
  • Dix was named the Big South Freshman of the Week after going 6-11 at the plate with his first two collegiate home runs to go with nine RBI. He had both a hit and an RBI in each of the team's three games on opening weekend.
  • Longwood opens up conference play March 5 as part of a m modified schedule that features 40 Big South games to 10 non-conference tilts.
  • Under head coach Ryan Mau, Longwood's pitching staff has ranked at or near the top of the Big South in strikeouts, finishing in the top three of the league four times in his six seasons at the helm.
By The Numbers
  • Longwood has posted 44 runs through four games, the most in the team's DI history. The last time Longwood posted 44 runs through teh first four games was in 1996 when the team opened with a three-game series against Belmont Abbey, scoring 31 runs, followed by a 13-run outing against Morris in the following game.
  • Longwood leads the Big South with 43 base hits and has racked up double digit hits in two of its four games this season. The Lancers posted 12 hits in the opener and totaled 15 against NC Central.In 2020, the team had at least 10 hits eight times in 17 games. In 2019, the team didn't notch at least 10 hits until its 13th game. 
  • The team's 43 hits through four games are the most since the Lancers piled up 45 through four games in 2011.
  • Longwood's offense tied for third in the Big South with 150 hits in 2020 while ranking fourth in hits per game with 8.8. The team was also third in RBI with 77.
  • Jack Schnell has been a steady source of offense throughout the team's first four games of 2020. The returning junior holds a .471 batting average (8-17) thanks to three multi-hit efforts in four games. He has also driven in seven runs and has knocked in runs in three of the team's four outings.
  • In the team's second game of the season, Schnell drove in the go-ahead run in the 10th inning with an RBI double to the left field corner at The Citadel.
  • On Feb. 23 against NC Central, he scored five runs, easily a career best, while tying a career mark with four RBI. In the game, he went 3-5 at the plate.
  • Eliot Dix came out swinging to open the 2021 season. The returning freshman posted a .545 average by going 6-11 at The Citadel while driving in nine runs over the three games. He had a hit and an RBI in each game.
  • He drove in nine of Longwood's 22 runs on opening, good for 40 percent of the team's total in the three-game series.
  • In the opener, he swatted his first two collegiate home runs while posting a perfect 4-4 line at the plate. He finished a triple short of the cycle, and his six RBI accounted for half of Longwood's runs in a 12-5 win. He was also intentionally walked in his other plate appearance.
  • In game two, he drove in the game-tying run in a tight, contested contest Longwood would go on to win in extra innings, 4-2.
  • In the series finale, he added two more RBI.
  • Hunter Gilliam was a force unto himself in Longwood's 22-14 win over North Carolina Central. The returning sophomore racked up five hits, tying a team record for hits in a game. He becomes the first Lancer to have a five-hit game since Colton Konvicka in 2013 against High Point.
  • In addition, Gilliam drove in six runs, including a towering three-run homer to dead center. He finished the game 5-6 to bump his average up to .529 (9-17) on the season. His eight RBI are second on the team, and he is tied with Jack Schnell with seven runs scored.
  • In game two at The Citadel, Gilliam drove in run in the 10th inning to put Longwood up 4-2, helping the Lancers win their first extra-inning game since 2018.
  • Gilliam was named Longwood's Freshman Student-Athlete of the Year in 2019 following his inaugural campaign where he hit .253 with four homers and 21 RBI.
  • Longwood won its first extra inning game since 2018 despite never leading until the 10th and final inning against The Citadel.
  • The Lancers won 4-2 behind a strong performance from the pitching staff. Andrew Melnyk gave the team six strong innings to tie a career mark, only giving up two runs, one earned, in the start.
  • Dylan Saale was masterful in relief, with the freshman getting credit for win after pitching three scoreless innings. He struck out the side in the ninth to punctuate his outing where he faced one more than the minimum.
  • Dillon Champagne threw a scoreless 10th to earn his second career save.
  • Jack Schnell drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI double in the 10th that broke a 2-2 tie, and Hunter Gilliam added an insurance run with an RBI base knock one batter later. 
Scouting The Citadel
  • Longwood hosts Oakland for a four-game series, the first time these two teams have met in Longwood's history.
  • Oakland is coming off a series at Middle Tennessee State that saw the Grizzlies win the middle game 5-2. MTSU won the first game 7-4 before taking the finale 8-1.
  • Last season, Oakland went 2-10 before the remainder of the season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now in 2021, Jordan Banfield takes the reins as the head coach, his first head coaching position at the collegiate level.
  • Offensively, Oakland has hit a pair of homers, doubles and triples this season. Tyler Trovinger leads the way with a .500 batting average and a solo home run. Lorenzo Elion hit the other homer to go with a .273 average. Elion also is tied for the team lead with three runs scored, along with Jared Miller. Miller holds a .222 batting average.
  • On the mound, Oakland has yet to allow a home run through three games, and the team has only surrendered 18 hits. Brandon Deans earned the team's with with five strong innings where he only surrendered two runs, one earned, on three hits with one strikeout against two walks. No reliever has made more than one appearance out of the bullpen. Hayden Nierman picked up the save in the team's win, striking out three across four innings without allowing a hit while only walking one. Andrew Hill also threw 4.1 relief innings while giving up three runs, none earned, on three walks and two hits against four strikeouts.
