Opening Tip:
  • Longwood is coming off their first two wins on the season - one being home, and one being on the road.
  • Kyla McMakin was named the Big South Player of the Week following the latest two victories for the Lancers, averaging 21.5 ppg, grabbing 13 rebounds, seven steals and scoring a season- high 28 points in the one point win over Duquesne.
  • After the first four games, Akila Smith is also ranked amongst the top in the Big South, ranking third in scoring (15.5 ppg) and tied for second in rebounds (6.8 rpg). Smith has scored 18 points in three of the four games this season.
  • Tra'Dayja Smith leads the Big South in assists per game (8.0) and has 32 on the season already, with 17 more assists than second place.
  • In 2020-21 Longwood finished a program-best third in the Big South behind 12 conference wins, also a program record since joining the league.
By the Numbers:
  • Longwood returns a wealth of experience, with eight players returning from last season's third-place team that put together one of the top season's in the programs Division I history.
  • Despite a difficult non-conference schedule, Longwood still ranks in the top three in the Big South in scoring offense through four games at 67.5 points per game.
  • Longwood also ranks in the top five in five other categories: blocks (19, first), free throw percentage (.766, first), three-point percentage (.311, third), steals (40, third) and assists (58, fourth).
  • Kyla McMakin, a two-time All-Big South First Team selection over her first two seasons at Longwood, earned her first Big South Player of the Week honor of the year following a clutch performance in the Lancers first two wins of the season. McMakin ranks in the top five in the Big South across five categories after the first four games: second in scoring (18.0 ppg), tied for third in steals per game (2.3), tied for third in 3-pointers made (seven), and tied for third in offensive rebounds per game (3.0).
  • McMakin also became the first Lancer to lead the Big South in scoring in back-to-back seasons. She averaged 18.8 points per game as a freshman and 17.9 per game as a sophomore, both the top mark in the conference.
  • Akila Smith and Kyla McMakin were both selected to the All-Big South Preseason First Team, the first time Longwood has had two players selected to the conference preseason first team.
  • On the year, Smith is averaging the second most points for the Lancers, and third in the Big South with 15.5 points per game. Smith is also ranked in the top three for rebounding (6.8 rpg) and in first for blocked shots (3.0 bpg) across the Big South.
  • Point guard Tra'Dayja Smith leads the Big South by double digits in assists, posting 32 so far this season, while second place only has 15. She led the Big South in assists per game in each of the past two seasons.
  • Given the difficulty of its opponents, Longwood continues to shine in the areas most important to the game plan – tenacity and energy on the defensive end of the court.
Series History:
  • This will be the first time the two teams meet in history
Quoteables:
  • "The way our point guards can probe, and find you open is great. And to know which player is on fire and make it work is so good." - Big South Player of the Week, Kyla McMakin
  • "We challenge Kyla, TraDayja and Akila, they know those three have to play like the veterans they are. You have to manage this game, make big plays, and I think all three of them do that for us in crunch time." - Head Coach Rebecca Tillett
