Longwood Women Fend Off St. Francis (PA) 63-54

Lancers Open Six-Game Road Swing With Win

LORETTO, Pa. – A tenacious defense paved the way for Longwood women's basketball to earn a second straight win as the Lancers outlasted the Saint Francis Red Flash 63-54 on Saturday afternoon.

The Lancers (2-2) won their second straight game behind a defensive effort that limited Saint Francis to a .344 shooting percentage (21-61) while also forcing 24 turnovers that turned into 16 points the other way.

Offensively, Longwood leaned Akila Smith, Kyla McMakin and Tra'Dayja Smith, as the trio combined for 47 of Longwood's 63 points. The Lancers were relentless in attacking the basket, with Akila Smith leading the way with 18 points as Longwood scored a whopping 40 points in the paint. McMakin added 15 points and a career-best five steals to go with nine rebounds, and Tra'Dayja Smith tallied 14 points, six assists and five rebounds.

For Saint Francis (0-4), Kaitlyn Maxwell had 15 points and Lili Benzel added 10 points as the Red Flash lost in their home opener.

Longwood never trailed behind a suffocating defense that shut down Saint Francis in the first quarter. The Lancers led 15-7 after the opening 10 minutes despite only shooting .250 from the floor, as their defense held the Red Flash to three made shots.

That effort paved the way to an 11-point lead at the half, as Saint Francis went 0-8 from three. Meanwhile, Akila Smith powered the Lancer offense with 12 of her 18 points to help build the 30-19 lead at the break.

The Lancer lead grew to be as 20 points midway through the third quarter, but Saint Francis put together a late run to close the gap to one possession in the fourth quarter. Longwood's experience helped close the game out in the final minutes. McMakin drove to the basket for a pair of clutch layups to keep the Lancers in front, and Tra'Dayja Smith iced the game by going 4-4 at the foul line in the final 20 seconds.

The Lancers have week off before continuing their six-game road swing with a trip out to Texas. On Sunday, November 28, Longwood plays at Lamar at 3 p.m. (EST) before traveling to Sam Houston State two days later on Tuesday, November 30 to play at 7 p.m. (EST).
