Spooky Slugfest A Smash Hit

Spooky Slugfest A Smash Hit

Baseball /
FARMVILLE, Va. – When Jason Voorhees scores the game-winning, walkoff run and a big inflatable baby is playing first, that can only mean one thing: the Spooky Slugfest returned.

Buddy Bolding Stadium was filled with a host of costumed characters, and smiles and laughter filled the stands at Longwood baseball's annual Halloween-themed scrimmage.

Spooky Slugfest 2021The game itself drew plenty of chuckles from the stands, considering that SpongeBob SquarePants was taking at bats next to a 6-6 hot dog and Tarzan. Hundreds of children roamed the field afterward, playing a variety of games and collecting candy. Smiles filled the field as kids interacted with a variety of Longwood student-athletes. At times, it was hard to tell who was having more fun, the student-athletes running the games or the kids collecting the candy for things like racing Batman, kicking a soccer ball to Superman or bowling with an inflatable pumpkin and pins.

Spooky Slugfest 2021"What a fun night," said Longwood baseball coach Chad Oxendine. "Seeing the smiles and laughter from all the kids that were here, that's exactly why we do things like this. We're all about bringing people together, and when we see the fun that everyone has, it makes it all worth it."

Spooky Slugfest GamesAll in all, each of the 14 teams in the athletic department had a presence at the stadium as the Longwood Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) partnered with the baseball team to bring together the entire athletic department.

As a part of the event, SAAC and the baseball team helped raise money for Prince Edward County Public Schools as part of the Pennies for Prince Campaign throughout the month of October. The Spooky Slugfest served as the final day of the fundraiser, which sought coins and bills that go entirely toward the benefit of Farmville's public school system.
