Lancers Grind Out Fourth Consecutive Win and Move into Top Spot in Big South Standings

FARMVILLE, Va. – There's a new leader in the Big South clubhouse.

Behind a game-winning goal from Big South Player of the Week Danielle Toone and a Big South-leading fifth shutout, Longwood (5-5-4, 4-0-2 Big South) took down reigning champion Campbell 1-0 Wednesday afternoon to climb into first place in the Big South standings.

Now winners of four straight and owners of the Big South's longest active unbeaten streak at six games, the Lancers sit in sole possession of first place with a one-point lead over second-place Winthrop (6-3-2, 4-1-1) and a two-point advantage over third-place Campbell (6-3-2, 4-1-0).

Longwood's latest win snapped the Fighting Camels' 10-game Big South win streak and 12-game unbeaten streak, which dates back to their run to the 2021 spring Big South Championship. The Lancers are now the only team Campbell has not defeated in their past 13 games, following last season's battle to a 0-0 draw.

In a physical battle with a Campbell team that entered the game ranked among the Big South's top two in goals, assists, shots and shutouts, the Lancers matched them every step of the way, holding a 13-12 edge in shots and earning four corner kicks to Campbell's five. The difference came on Toone's game-winner, which was her second straight following her go-ahead strike in Saturday's 3-2 comeback win at Gardner-Webb.

"We always have that mentality that no team's going to be easy, nobody's going to just let us win," said Longwood All-Big South defender and team captain Kylie Cahill, who played all 90 minutes at center back. "We have to go in with the same intensity every night – win balls in the air, win 50-50 balls. We're having so much fun. We're just glad to be playing after a year like last year."

Also the lone remaining Big South team without a conference loss, Longwood reached its latest rung on the way to the top behind Toone's team-leading fourth goal in the 51st minute. The veteran forward earned that chance by chasing down a well-placed, 30-yard pass from junior Kirsten Yuhas -- who sent her chip shot behind Campbell's defense from near midfield -- and beating Campbell goalkeeper Reaghan Duval one-on-one for a 1-0 lead.

"We definitely came out with a lot of confidence," Cahill said. "We knew it was going to be a tough game coming in, and we said before all we had to do was be on the same page. We know we're a good team."

Cahill, her fellow defensive starters Amanda Arnone, Brooke Bonner and Alayna Palamar, reserve defender Kaley Unger, and senior goalkeeper Jordan Horacek set the stage for Toone's game-winner by dealing the Fighting Camels their first Big South shutout of the season. Horacek stopped all six shots she faced and made two saves in the final two minutes, including a header by Emma Bushee with just 43 seconds to play.

"Amazing performance by an amazing group of young women," Longwood head coach Todd Dyer said. "It took a special effort like that to get a result against a very talented and accomplished Campbell team.

"Yuhas and Dani scored a great goal, and it was a total team effort to earn the shutout and preserve our first home win this year. We will enjoy this for a few hours and then turn our focus immediately to Saturday and Charleston Southern."

With four games remaining before the 2021 Big South Championship tournament, Longwood will host Charleston Southern Saturday at 2 p.m. on ESPN+. That showdown continues a four-game homestand that features a matchup against USC Upstae on Oct. 16 and the regular-season home finale against High Point on Oct. 20.
