Lopez Named MAC Defensive Player of the Week

Field Hockey /
FARMVILLE, Va. – After helping Longwood earn its fourth shutout of the season in a 7-0 blowout of Mid-American Conference rival Central Michigan, All-MAC defender Luna Lopez was named MAC Defensive Player of the Week by the conference office.

A 5-8 native of San Rafael, Mendoza, Argentina, Lopez spearheaded a Lancer backfield that limited Central Michigan to just four shots in Friday's 7-0 win, which was the program's largest-ever margin of victory in a MAC game. A three-time All-MAC first-team selection, the MAC Player of the Week award is a first for Lopez.

In Friday's MAC showdown, the Chippewas struggled to break through against Lopez and her fellow defenders, needing more than 39 minutes to attempt their first shot of the game. They put only two shots on goal, while all of four of their shots for the game came on penalty corners. Lopez also scored twice in the win and now leads Longwood in both goals (5) and points (13).

The win was the latest in a scorching stretch for Longwood field hockey, which has won four of its past five games to improve to 6-3 overall and 2-1 in the MAC. The Lancers lead the conference in both goals scored (26) and goals against average (1.33) and have scored at least four goals three times this season.

With six games remaining in the regular season, the Lancers are preparing for a high-stakes conference showdown this Friday, Oct. 8, against perennial MAC powerhouse Kent State in Kent, Ohio.
